by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 February 2025 / 6,115 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in the US, while the Nintendo Switch launched in the US in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS US:

Gap change in latest month: 689,784 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 693,081 - Switch

Total Lead: 4,586,542 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 47,457,709

DS Total Sales: 52,044,251

December 2024 is the 94th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.69 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 0.69 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 4.59 million units.

The 94th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is December 2024, while for the DS it is August 2012. The Switch has sold 47.46 million units, while the DS sold 52.04 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 53.80 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 6.34 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

Yeah, it's not outselling DS in the USA.

Why not

Cause in the past 12 months Switch has sold 3.25M units in the US. It would have to sell the same amount for the next two years in order to beat the DS. And since the Switch 2 announcement we should expect to see a decrease in Switch sales. We also expect Switch to be in production until Mar 2027.

Because the gap is too big

Yes it will with this sales trajectory.

This trajectory is up to December 2024 and therefore doesnt account for the Switch 2 announcement this month, the showcase in April and its future release. All things which will impact Switch 1 sales.

Switch finally surpassed PS2 in US. Very very very impressive. PS2 was manufactured during 12 YEARS. Switch, until now, 8 years. We don't know what will happen with Sw1 production from this present year on.

DS, in US Market, was so HUGE... it's almost impossibble to beat by another console.

Production till march 2027! Mark my words. They're gonna axe the OLED model later this year max. Maybe the original next, but the lite will stay till 2027!

Switch won't get axed before march 2027. I am even willing to bet.

Worldwide the Switch will outsell the DS. Only a fool doubts this! The Switch will be at a minimum of 150 million shipped for Q3! And thats extremly lowballing and would put the Switch at 9 million for 2024. Even if it was down 50%+ (close to 60%) it would still sell over 4 million this year, enough to pass this 154,02 million. Next year's gonna be 1 million minimum till it lands at 155 million+ in march 2027. Remember thats the most peissimistic scenario! Not even a diehard Sony fanboy and Nintendo hater would predict numbers that low!

I know. The US is unlikley but i have another question: What is the total of PS2, NS and DS in the US and in Americas?

  • 0
XtremeBG killer7 (on 29 January 2025)

why didn't you asked the person with the data ? It's 46.5M for the PS2, 47.5M for the NSW and 53.8M for the US. For North America (since this one is available) it's 53.65M for the PS2, 52.25M for the Switch, and 57.9M for the DS.

Thank you so much my friend. For some reason i always got confused with those sales of "Americas" and "US"😵‍'
That makes me think that the Switch will stay Nr.2 in US but clear 50 million, and in North America the Switch will pass the PS2 but stay behind the DS. The DS should be out of reach but PS2 will be down to Nr.3 in both cases!
