PS5 vs Switch Sales Comparison - November 2024 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 12 January 2025 / 15,184 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Switch.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. Switch Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 1,623,671 - PS5

Gap change over last 12 months: 9,528,073 - NS

Total Lead: 15,240,581 - NS

November 2024 is the 49th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the Nintendo Switch by 1.62 million units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the PS5 by 19.53 million units. The PS5 is behind the Switch by 15.24 million units.

There is no way that the PS5 will win this one but it's been putting up a surprisingly strong fight, all things considered.

PS5 won't beat Switch LTD. That should be clear. But 120-140 million is in the cards i guess...

I agree it won't outsell the Switch but I can't see it selling more than 120 million unless this gen is really long.

I think the PS5 will end at 120 million and the Switch will sell 160 million units

i see closer to 130-135mil for PS5. Comparing sales to PS4, and noting that PS5 will last at least one fiscal year extra, i think it should comfortably clear PS4’s 120mil.

It probably won't even reach 100 million. My guess is 92-95 million max.

92-95m is definitely too low for PS5, honestly. The PS5 should be close to 90, if not slightly above it, by the end of this year (especially if GTA 6 still makes it for 2025). From there, it should definitely reach 100m and pass the Wii & PS1., Still don't see it passing the PS4 though (would say max 115m), but if the PS6 doesn't launch until 2028 then maybe it can surpass the PS4. To be fair, if the rumors are true that the next Xbox launches in 2026, then I could see Sony potentially releasing PS6 in 2027 (then you'd potentially have Switch 2, next Xbox and PS6 in back to back to back years).

Let's say PS5 is at 70 million by the end of 2024. It has peaked this year, so I doubt it's going to sell 20 million in a single year anymore, as sales tend to decrease at let's say 10% to 20% year over year. Also, the Switch 2's release will factor in the PS5's sales more than GTA VI, since the majority of GTA VI buyers will have already acquired their desired consoles by the time it comes out. Besides all that, remember that the highest selling game in that franchise came out first on the lowest selling PlayStation home console. I think people are actually overestimating GTA's potential to move consoles at this point in the generation.

PS5 is at 65.5m as of end of September. I'd guess it would be at like 71m or maybe 72m by the end of 2024. I was moreso expecting close to 90m by the end of 2025. Just speculating that it could be above 90m by the end of 2025. In all likelihood, I'd expect it to be around 87m or 88m by the end of 2025.

Looks like we both underestimated PS5's Holiday 2024 sales lol. It reached 75m LTD by the end of 2024! I can definitely see it reaching 90m by the end of 2025, especially if GTA VI releases next year. I also see PS6 launching in 2027 (especially if the next Xbox launches in 2026). Despite that, I now see the PS5 passing PS4's lifetime sales. Probably passes Wii & PS1 in 2026 and PS4 & Game Boy shortly after PS6 launch.

Yes, I was way off, but I still stand to my points, difference being it might make it to 100 million and more, but I doubt it will pass the PS4. This year it reached 75m because of the Pro, so the decrease in sales might be steeper than I anticipated.

I wouldn't be so sure it will beat the PS4... i feel like PS5 will be down YoY unless GTA 6 really lights the sales on fire.
