The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

November 2024 is the 49th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 3 by 2.35 million units.
In the last 12 months, the PS5 has grown its lead over the PS3 by 4.79 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 24.43 million units.
The PlayStation 5 has sold 67.70 million units in 49 months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 43.27 million units. Month 49 for the PlayStation 5 is November 2024 and for the PlayStation 3 is November 2010.
The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 71 when it had sold 68.04 million units.
The PlayStation 3 crossed 50 million in month 54, 60 million in month 62, and 70 million in month 73. The PlayStation 3 sold 87.4 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 19.70 million units behind lifetime PS3 sales.

The PS5 could surpass the global sales of the PS3 by the end of December, the large number of releases this year should help a lot
idk abt that one. This is looking to be a preeeetty close battle. PS5 only has a very slight lead of 24mil over PS3...maybe it'd be a little bit different if PS5 could pull a little bit further ahead, but atm it's still very much up in the air. I'm betting on PS3 winning this one tbh.
We need to consider that Switch 2 will make the PS5 irrelevant. It has Nvidia AI technology unlike the PS5 and will absolutely destroy the PS5 because of it.

that’s what im saying! PS5 will hit the cliff (NSW was actly supposed to hit it in 2020, but then COVID moved the cliff over to PS5) and will only hit 70mil LTD. They will hit this cliff next week.
if PS3 could do like 90m..... I have to believe PS5 can at least go above 110m.
