The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

hard call. Can’t say I’m convinced of either one winning atm. That 22mil lead by PS5 is razor thin! Guess we’ll just have to sit and wait on this one…

It should beat the PS3 easily. The question is rather how much momentum the PS5 will have after overtaking the PS3

The struggle for PS5 to keep up with the mighty impressive PS3 is really showing and its causing a big concern for PlayStation!! I blame the price and shortages for the first few years on PS5s side for sure.

I don't think so! Maybe at the beginning of the generation, but the shortage has been over for a while. Perhaps the consoles, which are becoming more and more like PCs, are causing a shift towards PCs, right?
