by William D'Angelo , posted on 16 October 2024 / 4,051 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Switch.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

I wonder how many games the NSW has sold until today or if it did set a new record already.

What a great success the Switch is. It's amazing to witness this success of a home console/portable console in this day & age. PS4 was something we hadn't seen in years, too.

But the Switch is even succeeding that.

Sure, you have to factor in the much lower price point of the Switch compared to X|S and PS5. A 299 PS5/X|S would sell better, too.

But nonetheless congrats to Nintendo!

1.266 billion, as Chico said. That puts it #3 in all-time software sales, only behind the PS2 (1.537 billion) & PS4 (absolute minimum of 1.419 billion, but likely ahead of PS2 by now; Sony started reporting software for PS4 & PS5 combined as soon as the PS5 released).

The gap is pretty big and it will likely grow rapidly the coming years. Especially now that Europe and Japan sales are slowing down a lot.

this was Christmas 2020, back when the only available system was Nintendo Switch lol. 30mil during F'21 alone, over 12mil from the holiday quarter.
