The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

Total Lead: 5,429,886 - PS4 & XOne
Total Combined PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Sales: 90,789,636
Total Combined PS4 and Xbox One Sales: 96,219,522
In August 2024, the gap grew in favor of the combined sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the last month by 0.21 million units.
In the last 12 months, the PS4 and Xbox One has sold 3.30 million units more than the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are currently behind by 5.43 million units.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in their first 46 months sold a combined 90.79 million units, while the PS4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 96.22 million units. Month 46 is August 2024 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while for the PS4 and Xbox One it is August 2017.
The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 175.14 million units. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are 84.35 million units behind lifetime sales of the PS4 and Xbox One.

I love how a lot of people think GTA 6 is this "savior" for these declining console sales. What's going to increase these console sales are price cuts. Plus GTA 6 isn't expected to come out at the earliest Fall 2025. We are a year away from that game and there's a possibility it gets delayed to 2026.
in my opinion the price point is beginning to hurt sales... also this gen is gonna be long....
Well not much has released to show this generation is that much better than last gen. It's been baby steps so far.
Its because on the whole, there hasnt been as many must have games/exclusives this gen compared to the last one. I think covid also really hurt game development and is partially responsible for the numerous disappointing game releases this year. Ps5 and series X price not dropping isnt helping either
GTA 6 must be a game changer to save gen 9 (which I don't believe). I also don't expect a near-term trend reversal.
gta 6, cod only current gen will give this gen a boost.
