PS5 Best-Seller in Europe in September 2024, Software Sales Increase 20% - Sales
by William D'Angelo , posted on 10 October 2024 / 8,070 ViewsSoftware sales in the tracked Europe markets for the Europe chart for September 2024 increased compared to a year ago, however, hardware sales fell. This is according to GSD data reported by GamesIndustry.
There were 17.6 million video games sold in Europe in September, which is up by over 20 percent year-on-year.
EA Sports FC 25 was the best-selling game for the month with the first two week of sales two percent lower than EA Sports FC 24. Sales for the more expensive premium version, which included early access, are 10 percent higher.
The Crew 2 shot up to second place as the game was discounted to just €1.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 debuted in third place and is already the third best-selling new game of 2024. It is the fastest-selling Warhammer game ever in Europe and after just four weeks in nearly the best-selling Warhammer game in terms of lifetime sales.
Astro Bot debuted in fourth place with sales 34 percent higher than 2022's Sonic Frontiers, 52 percent higher than 2020's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, and 7.5 percent higher than 2021's Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
NBA 2K25 debuted in sixth place with sales up one percent compared to NBA 2K24.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom debuted in eighth place. Nintendo does not share digital sales and these figures are only for the first week of availability. Physical sales are 15 percent lower than 2019's The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown debuted in 10th place and Age of Mythology Retold debuted in 12th place. Harry Potter Quidditch Champions debuted in 28th place, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster debuted in 48th place, and Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed debuted in 83rd place.
Two previous PS5 exclusives shot up the charts due to the release of the PC versions in September. God of War Ragnarök came in 15th place and Final Fantasy XVI came in 27th place.

Hardware sales for the month of September fell by a massive 18 percent year-on-year to 335,000 consoles sold in the tracked markets. The UK, Germany, and some smaller countries in Europe are not tracked when it comes to the hardware sales.
The PlayStation 5 was comfortably the best-selling console, with sales down 17 percent year-on-year. The Nintendo Switch came in second place, with sales up 1.5 percent year-on-year, likely helped by the Zelda Switch Lite console.
Xbox Series X|S came in third place as sales fell a massive 58 percent year-on-year. It should be noted Starfield released last year, while there was no big Xbox console exclusives released this year.
Sales for accessories and other add-on products dropped 2.4 percent year-over-year to 1.1 million units. The PS5 DualSense remained the best-selling accessory.

The fact that the Series consoles are gonna sell much worse than the Xbox One is crazy. Microsoft knows exactly what they are doing by moving over to PlayStation.
(random tangent) call me crazy…but I do not believe XBSX will sell “much worse than the Xbox One”. I am specifically looking at the release of GTAVI and competitive pricing of Xbox over Playstation. It is very possible we could see 8-12mil Xbox systems move during holiday 2025 from GTAVI alone.
(Worth noting is that I project around 10-14mil PS5s to move during a similar period. Seeing how College Football performed back in July, I do not believe this is too outlandish of an expectation especially when Microsoft has so many games (as shown in their June presentation) planned for Xbox during 2025.)
This alone sends XBSX to a minimum of 38mil with 7-12mil left outside of Holiday 2025. Again, you can call me crazy and I will completely understand lol. This is my theory, assuming GTAVI actually does end up releasing during Holiday 2025…if it does not, then I’m unsure.
That's certainly a theory you can have. I do think both companies will see a boost but nowhere near that big for either one of them.
if GTAVI is console exclusive on systems with a combined install base of 100mil, I would be shocked if system hardware doesn’t skyrocket in response. Launch numbers of 20-30mil for GTAVI would certainly send XBSX/PS5 sales through the roof for the Holiday quarter. (Keep in mind: NSW sold >10mil during Holiday 2020 and Holiday 2021. PS5 and XBSX pushing 20mil combined sounds consistent noting how massive a game GTAVI will likely be.)
Has there ever been an example in history of a single game, single-handedly rescuing the sales of a failing console though that's already 5 years old (will be by time GTA6 launches). It's just too optimistic
that is true, and you may be correct in calling me overly optimistic. However, what I’m looking at is 200mil views on YT for the reveal trailer: If these numbers are any indicator of consumer interest, then this may be an unprecedented release to move systems.
My guess is that Sony won’t be able to keep up with the meteoric demand for PS5 systems during the holiday (having >14mil systems ready for the holiday season is a stretch noting the inherent risk tied to overproducing systems), leading many consumers to look toward Xbox. This alongside affordability — noting that XBSS would likely be the cheapest option to play GTAVI and XBSX would be the cheapest option which plays physical games — is why I’m thinking Xbox will benefit from GTAVI next holiday to levels close to that of PlsyStation.
As for evidence of this theory panning out in reality, I’m looking at College Football.
And why exactly are those people going to pick Xbox over Playstation to play GTA VI?

Xbox with a -58% this September following a -35% in September 2023 amounts to a whopping 1/4 of what they were selling 2 years ago.
Yeah, sales are WAY down for Xbox. We are talking ~25K sold in these tracked markets, plus UK, Germany, and the other smaller Europe countries missing in this data to get the full picture of sales on Europe.
Estimates:
PS5: 240k
Nintendo Switch: 66k
Xbox Series X/S: 26k
the estimate for switch is kinda crazy knowing the release of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and the Switch Lite Zelda Edition.
I wonder if America sales are really hard to track.
I mean we still don't know the August monthly sales yet.
Circana (NPD) should be releasing their August US figures tomorrow. I plan on getting the Americas and worldwide estimates up tomorrow. Along with the breakdown articles. Normally I spread sales out a bit, but it is already very late.
You're the best, keep going with your amazing job buddy.
Thanks!
Ouch... Astro only debuted 7.5% higher than Ratchet Rift Apart... with 3x as many consoles in the wild
I don't feel like that's a good sign at all
When I google the sales for rift apart, the results suggest it has sold about 4 million. You don't think selling better than a game that sold 4 million copies is good for a team of Asobi's size?
I hope it continues to do so, just a lot smaller than I expected.
But I was always a bit disappointed with Ratchets sales... Absolutely amazing game that deserved more support.
Do you think Kirby Forgotten Land debuted with bigger sales than Mario Odyssey simply because it was on userbase 5x bigger?
In anycase, this week in European sales Astro is top 3 in all market that have released data. It's growth lead on Ratchet will likely grow a lot over time. One is a highly established franchise, with a dozen entries across Playstation history and a film to its name... the other only has a VR game and a tech demo.
1) Odyssey launched in year one of the Switch and went on to sell 28+ Million units... Which would be amazing for Astro
2) Kirby FL was the best selling Kirby ever... but does anyone really care about Kirby outside of SmashBros? lol
Yeah sure it would. It would also be amazing to see Xenoblade sell like Pokemon lol.
What were you expecting? It's a smaller game/IP and it wasn't bundled at all, yet it beat Rift Apart (bundled for a while) and comfortaby beat Sonic Frontiers and Crash 4 which launched on an absolutely massive install base.
What new platformers beside Mario and probably Kirby Forgotten Land sell better?
Sonic Frontier and Crash don't really count here because it ONLY comparting it to PS5 numbers...
Both those games are available on last/current gen PS/Xbox, PC and Switch which gives consumers a wide variety of options.
Which makes AstroBot beating them even more impressive. A game (from established franchises like Sonic and Crash) that is available on multiple platforms and to several hundred million players is expected to sell better than a small PS5 exclusive.
AstroBot is doing great so far for what it is. One of the best performing platformers excluding Mario.
It is comparing the Astro sales to the opening month for those games on every available platform. Crash 4 didn’t even launch on PS5.
The person responsible for reporting these EU sales put it quite simply
"Astro Bot has done better than basically every new 3D platform game in the last 10 years (Mario aside). Its true success won't be known for years, but it's had a strong start for the genre."
