This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

July 2024 is the 45th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 175,750 units.
In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.88 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 2.32 million units.
The PS5 has sold 60.16 million units in 45 months, while the PS4 sold 62.49 million units. Month 45 for the PS5 is July 2024 and for the PS4 is July 2017.
The PS4 crossed 70 million in month 50, 80 million in month 56, and 90 million in month 62. The PS4 has sold 117.18 million units to date. The PS5 is 57.02 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales.

That's still a pretty close gap taking every obstacle into account the PS5 had to deal with.
It'd be still possible to catch up.
2017 was the biggest year for PlayStation 4's sales, therefore it feels like the following 3-4 months may increase the margin between consoles but then starting with early 2025 PS5 may quickly catch up PS4.
PS4 had a nice price drop by this point in his life cycle.
