The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Wii.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Wii launched in November 2006. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

June 2024 is the 44th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the Nintendo Wii by 107,522 units.
In the last 12 months, the Nintendo Wii has outsold the PlayStation 5 by 1.21 million units. The Nintendo Wii is ahead of the PlayStation 5 by 11.98 million units.
The PlayStation 5 has sold 59.30 million units in44 months, while the Nintendo Wii sold 71.28 million units. Month 44 for the PlayStation 5 is June 2024 and for the Nintendo Wii it is June 2010.
The Nintendo Wii crossed 80 million in month 50, 90 million in month 61, and 100 million in month 85. The Nintendo Wii sold 101.63 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 42.33 million units behind lifetime Wii sales.

The PS5 still has a huge gap to close but it should be able to outsell the Wii, assuming that its sales don't fall off a cliff.
The gap chart suggests an upcoming make it or break it point (diagonal resistance, horizontal support), probably during the next holidays. A lower low at 14k should indicate that PS5 won't be able to outsell Wii. A higher high at 7k should indicate the opposite. The latter should need a bit more time if the trend is set.
