looks like PS4 about has this wrapped up unless GTA6 can really boost sales
that's terrible for the PS5, if Sony doesn't do something the PS5 will finish the generation behind the PS4 because of Europe ...
Sony does not need the PS5 to beat the PS4 in Europe for it to be considered a success. If they were desperate for more sales they could lower the price but they don't need to to it seems
I'm honestly not sure how much it matters. Those PS4 users are still very active in the ecosystem which is the most important thing to Sony. The days of trying to get people to change generations as quickly as possible are gone. Now it's about just keeping people in your ecosystem. Eventually those PS4 users will upgrade to PS5 and I'm sure by then PS6 will be right around the corner. I doubt we even see real exclusives once the PS6 comes out. I think everything will be PS5 and PS6.
"We believe in generations" backtracked (which business-wise was understandable), COVID, insane shortages in '21 & '22, RRP increase instead of decrease, a noticeable lack of true PS5 native 1sts (which eventually will come in the latter half of PS5), money inflation, high rising costs of living in Europe (especially in the bigger EU markets like UK, Germany, France), and, of course, don't let me even get started on the Russian attack and war on Ukraine and right-shifting politics across EU.
EU's had some very, very rough and tragic past 5 years.
This all seems to fit perfectly being the reasons why today PS5 is behind PS4 by 5m units in the EU.
As everything, literally everything mentioned happened from 2020 to 2024 and is partly still going on.
I can still see a very little chance for the PS5 to catch up.
But in order to do that, the gap must not grow above the 6m to 7m threshold. At least that is what I would estimate.
Then again:
All other sales outside the EU have grown out better than PS4 did there, balancing the EU gap.
