The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.
The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

February 2024 is the 84th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 200,502 units when you align the launches.
In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 2.65 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 0.54 million units.
The 84th month for the Switch is February 2024, while for the DS it is November 2011. The Switch has sold 32.33 million units, while the DS sold 32.87 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 74.
The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 0.66 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

It should be noted shipment figures for the Switch have surpassed the DS, so it is only a matter of time before the Switch becomes the best-selling platform of all time in Japan.
Considering that the Switch sells ~200k units per month in Japan. We should see it surpass the DS by June 2024 at the latest.

The Switch is a monster! You can barely even see a decline in sales figures (outside of holidays) from its fifth year versus its eighth year when looking at the graph.
off topic, but for once I glanced over at the DS sales figure…that second and third year are insane! Sold what looks like 20mil in what looks only two years.
Both are amazing video games devices. And yeah DS sold almost 20M in 3 years. It took Switch an extra year and 3 month (I think) to reach 20M.
It's astonishing how consistent the Switch has been this past year.
it looks like the month of June will be the month when the Switch will become the best selling console in japan.
Is it me but was is with the flat lining of the blue line in one of the charts.
If you are referring to the purple dashed line, it’s a representation of the total GB+GBC sales.
