This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S both launched in November 2020. The PlayStation 5 launched November 12, 2020 in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, and the rest of the world on November 19, 2020. The Xbox Series X|S launched worldwide on November 10, 2020.

January 2024 is the 39th month the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.93 million units.
In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 14.35 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 26.49 million units.
The PlayStation 5 has sold 54.17 million units in 39 months, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 27.68 million units. The PlayStation 5 has a 66.2 percent marketshare (+5.2% year-over-year), compared to 33.8 percent for the Xbox Series X|S (-5.2% year-over-year).
The PlayStation 5 is currently 0.80 million units behind the PlayStation 4 when you align launches and the Xbox Series X|S is behind the Xbox One by 2.21 million units.

This is why they will bring more of their games over to PS. There's no point trying to compete with PS now. They tried for 23 years and did well with 360, but gaming is obviously something you can't just conquer with money
with the benefit of nearly 15 years of hindsight it's even more clear now than ever that the only reason Xbox 360 was doing so well in its gen was because sony fumbled so hard. There was a 2006-2010 stretch where PS3 sucked and everything was 360 but then Sony got their shit in gear and it's been a slaughter ever since.
PS1 they dominated and became the first console to breach 100 million
PS2 they dominated so hard they were the first console to breach 150 million and still the best seller
PS3 was their weakest yet with only 88 million...still the 8th best seller
PS4 they dominated and to this day is the 5th best selling, 3rd home console
PS5 looks to be performing at about the same as PS4 with what I expect is a late-game surge
They've always done well. They're currently the 1st, 3rd, and 4th best selling home consoles, not including strict handhelds, and PS5 looks to nestle itself in there somewhere.
Of the top 10 platforms including handhelds they hold #1, 5, 6, 8, and 10. With PS2, 4, 1, 3, and PSP respectively.
I fully expect the Switch to breach 160 and become #1 but you can't pretend that isn't an astounding run. Xbox/Microsoft has more money but Sony has more success in the industry. Period.
Sony did screw up bad, but MS were very aggressive and it really paid off for them. They launched their console a year earlier. It had timed exclusivity deals for stuff like DLC for GTA4 and COD. They used their power as a megacorp to great effect. With Xbone and Xseries, it doesn't feel like a powerful business is behind it. Feels so weak and indecisive.
Yea to me MS started losing ground when they stopped focusing on bringing games over. I don't care if they are 3rd or first party. Mean while Sony heavily invested in their own first party games and bringing over 3rd party games. Even now this year will basically be saved for Sony because of 3rd party support which is the smart play. I don't understand why MS always tries to focus on doing everything but securing 3rd party deals. Now they are so far behind I don't think it would even be worth it.
