The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

Wow! Horrible supply over a fair bit of its life and still soon (already) ahead of the second best selling playstation. It is going to be interesting to see where the ceiling for ps5 is. Especially since I suspect a longer console cycle this time around.

As the month go by we will be able to make a better prediction. Right now, it looks like they are practically even. So that puts it around 115-120 million by lives end. So exactly the same as PS4, but like you mentioned, the PS5 is trending ahead of the PS4. So in about a year when we look at this chart again, we will have to adjust our predictions..

I am not sure why everyone on this site acts like the PS5 is some amazing selling monster when it is tracking almost identically to the PS4. Yeah it had a slow start due to supply but when supply returned a year ago it didn't quickly blow the PS4 out of water it just caught up. If anything I would look at the these numbers and think the PS brand while strong isn't really growing.generation over generation.

I mean, looking at this chart it appears the PS5 outsold the ps4 by about 4.5M in the last 11 months so not really sure why you’re coming to the conclusions you are from this particular graph.

So you're looking at this graph where the PS5 has been catching up to the PS4 ever since stock got better and what you make of it is the PS brand isn't growing gen over gen? You think the PS5 is just all of a sudden gonna stop selling more than the PS4 and it'll stay around it's level forever?

The past few months it's sold a pretty similar amount and with the pent up demand now fulfilled it's a reasonable expectation for sales to be down next year and end up being close to what the PS4 did in 2017 so I think it'll stay around its level for at least a while.

Your whole point is moot because it's now ahead of ps4 and will stay ahead of ps4. ps5 had the ps4 pro to compete with too. Sales will explode even more when gta6 performs better on ps5/ps5pro than it does on the xbox series.

PS5 selling at parity with PS4 would be a win given it has a higher price.
