This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.
The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

February 2023 is the 72nd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the DS by 120,947 units when compared to the Switch during the same timeframe.
In the last 12 months, the DS has outsold the Switch by 3.99 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 9.70 million units.
The 72nd month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is February 2023, while for the DS it is October 2010. The Switch has sold 122.77 million units, while the DS sold 132.47 million units during the same timeframe.
The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 31.25 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

The only way I can see Switch winning this is by having longer legs than DS. It really depends when Switch 2 releases.
Yeah, while the DS will start to drop off quickly after the upcoming holidays, the gap is simply too big to catch up normally now.
Pretty much, unless Switch is able to keep selling well for at least 2 more years I can't see it happening.
I think that two months from now is when the real battle between these two will begin
DS sold ~8 millions within the next 2 months, which means the gap chart will mark a new lower low. I think there's not enough time left for Switch to turn this around. If the Switch successor launches 2024 as expected, holiday sales will decrease significantly.
