Xbox Series S Discounted by $50/£50 Until December 24 - News

Microsoft has cut the price of the Xbox Series S by $50/£50 in the US and UK until December 24, Christmas Eve, according to VideoGamesChronicle.
This continues the deal that was seen over Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The Xbox Series S in the US now has an RRP of $249.99 in the US and £199.99 in the UK.
Microsoft this month announced it is raising the price of its major first-party Xbox games built for Xbox Series X|S from $60 to $70 in 2023. Forza Motorsport, Redfall, and Starfield will cost $69.99 when they launch next year. Regional pricing may differ, however, no specific prices were given for other countries.

The decision to offer a low cost point of entry into the 9th generation looks like a genius move.
I own all of the current systems, but Xbox has become my primary platform because I was able to pick up a series S at a low cost to put on a secondary TV. So when I'm buying multi-platform games, I'm buying them on Xbox so that I can conveniently play them in both my gaming area and my bedroom. That makes my PS5 automatically a secondary system for me, because I am tied only to the gaming area.
Of course, I can buy a secondary PS5 as well, but that's a significantly more expensive option than a secondary Xbox.
What a bargain. This + gamepass is a great combo!
Of course, I mean that's the entire point of the series S, to have the lowest cost of entry in gaming possible especially when combine with GamePass. So yeah they will discount it at every opportunity they get.

Also still on sale in Canada for $299.99 CAD (equivalent of $220.04 USD at the current exchange rate).
Microsoft originally tried to drop it to $319.99 CAD, but some retailers dropped it to $309.99 CAD, and then eventually Microsoft game up and just dropped it everywhere to $299.99 CAD because it's a much more marketable number. And the Canadian dollar actually declined a bit since then, so for the time being we're getting a crazy good deal on the Series S compared to other territories.
Just add an inexpensive external SSD to run back-compat titles, and you're good to go.
Actually, it looks like the UK is getting an even better deal as 199.99 UKP is $245.21 USD. But Canadian (and U.S.) advertised prices are before sales taxes, and UK prices are generally advertised after tax. So once you remove the sales tax (VAT) included in the UK price, it's the cheapest of the three, isn't it? $204.34 USD after the 20% VAT is removed, by my math. I mean, what's a controller worth in the UK? How much extra are you paying to get the rest of the console above and beyond the controller?
Get that number 1 console this christmas MS.
Switch won the last 4 years, don't see why it wouldn't be the case this year
You are most likely right. However, it is worth noting that Switch sales have been on the decline YoY, VGC has Switch selling 19.86m consoles by the end November 2021, but only 15.55m consoles by the end of November 2022. That means it is down by over 21% YoY. Meanwhile, Xbox Series has so far been up YoY by 31%, selling 2m more consoles by the end of November 2022 than it had sold by the end of November 2021.
So, if we go back and look at December 2021 sales for Switch and Xbox Series. Switch sold 4.8m during December 2021, while Xbox Series sold 1.82m. So, if we decrease Switch's December 2021 sales by the same 21% that Switch has so far been down YoY by, we get an estimate of 3.79m consoles sold during December 2022. If we increase the Xbox Series sales from December 2021 by the same 31% that Xbox Series has so far been up YoY by, we get 2.38m consoles.
So that gives us an estimate of 3.79m Switch for December, and 2.38m for Xbox Series. So yeah, a definite Switch win in 2022. However, if these same YoY decreases for Switch continue in 2023, and the same Xbox Series up YoY trend continues into 2023, we could potentially see a scenario where a discounted Series S beats Switch Holiday 2023.

And why cant you do that with the Steamdeck?. You do know its a hybrid like Switch so it can be used on a tv also. I have used mine on the tv many times.
It is just a matter of plugging HDMI to the TV isn't it? And sure for simplicity use the power outlet that is very close. For controls it isn't removable but you can use a big variety of BT controls right?
indeed. i got a cheap €15 hub for mine that has a hdmi connection. But you can use any bt controller you like or might already have laying around. I have been playing my PC games more on the Steamdeck then i have been on my gaming PC. Finally finishing metro 2033 atm. Just being able to relax back on the couch or in bed and playing them PC games have been a real game changer for me.
Yep, besides playing legally the Switch content I would say the only "downside" steamdeck have is that you can't use the controls embue on it while on this setup and would need to use another one, but considering you can use any control versus needing to buy expensive ones if you want to play with additional ones in Switch this is very very minor disadvantage.
But when you use the hdmi, does it upscale the full screen and resolution, or is it kind of cut off?
I would bet it is similar to Switch and any other system that the TV itself upscale to fit on its screen.

It costs like €50 more then the Switch Oled. For the power it packs i wouldnt exactly call it expensive. Even more so if you compare it to some of them Chinese handheld pc's that costs over €900 for less performance in most cases.
Well then I wouldn't call it expensive (but also not "cheap"), but still Steam Deck would be more expensive than Switch so buying it to emulate Switch wouldn't save him money on the HW (but can't say I haven't thought about doing it).
Well it would be kinda silly just to buy it to emulate Switch alone. But for playing PC games, PC xbox releases, and PC Sony releases plus all the games you can emulate the go or hooked up to a tv the value is simply insane.
On that end yes. And considering general prices of PC notebooks/desktops you wouldn't get much higher performance on a generic HW anyway.

cheaper on SW, I was talking about HW itself. If we are going to consider not buying the games PC will always be cheaper than any other platform even if you buy a very beefy setup.
With the sales Switch is still having and Nintendo as much as possible try to profit on HW that is very unlikely.
It is a good price, and I would expect this to be the current price early next year.
