The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

August 2022 is the 22nd month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox Series X|S when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox 360 by just 22,884 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has grown its lead over the Xbox Series X|S by 53,353 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 136,581 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 321,357 units in 22 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 447,938 units. Month 22 for the Xbox Series X|S is August 2022 and for the Xbox 360 is September 2007.

The Xbox 360 crossed 500,000 units sold in Japan in month 24, one million units in month 40, and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime.

Considering how much PS fell off in Japan, MS could actually start competing there if they really want to

I'm sure they want to, but there is no way they will do it with sold consoles. Xcloud is how they will penetrate Japan at a meaningful rate.

Comparatively speaking, it's not doing bad. It does have the potential to outsell the 360 in Japan. I wonder how much of this is caused by the japanese public's frustration with the PS5...

I think that's part of it. I think lack of broad PS5 availability is part of it. I think the appeal of Game Pass is part of it (especially when paired with PC Game Pass, for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers). I think that the Series S being the most compact current-gen home console is part of it. I think it's not any one thing.
