The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

It could be very, very close. The difference may be less than 1 millon in the end, but I think Switch will be able to outsell NDS in Japan.

Switch should have one significant holiday season more than DS.

and that is the reason it will be close.

As long as they still have the "price cut" bullet not used yet, everything is possible.

I'm not sure they need it with just under 4 million per year to sell. That's not much for the switch. Obviously it's getting a little saturated, but, even without the holiday season, switch will sell over 3 million per year at the current rate.

This might be over by early 2024.

I'm thinking it's gonna sell another 2mil this year, 3.5mil next year and then only 2mil are left to surpass the DS, which it can do in 2024.

Seems a little low if you're factoring the holidays, but not unreasonable.

Splatoon 3 and Pokemon should help too, although certainly to a lesser extent at this point in the lifespan.
