The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS.

The 3DS launched in February 2011 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles are off by one month.

Good chance of Switch overtaking lifetime sales of 3DS in Japan on the April 2022 chart.
I reckon it will achieve it during the first half of May at the latest.

I am thinking it will probably happen sooner. It depends on how strong holiday sales are though.

Switch should be able to cross 30M by the end of it's life. I wonder if games like Splatoon 3 (and others of course) can give the console enough push to become the best selling game system of all time in Japan.

It is difficult for me to imagine that a 3rd episode, can add any more boost after 5 years.

I'm not saying just Splatoon 3 would, other games too. That was just an example. But I do think number 3 will move units next year.

Especially if Splatoon 3 is the highest selling which it likely will be. But I would guess it's going to be the most appealing game in Japan next year for switch. That's unless something else comes out that is unannounced.
