Rumor: Warner Bros. Considering Selling NetherRealm and TT Games

Rumor: Warner Bros. Considering Selling NetherRealm and TT Games - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 02 October 2021 / 3,472 Views

WarnerMedia and all of its gaming studios - Avalanche, Rocksteady, NetherRealm, TT Games, and more - are set to become part of a new company with Discovery. However, Windows Central's Jez Cordon speaking in the Xbox Two podcast claims WarnerMedia might have other plans for two of those studios.

WarnerMedia was considering selling off Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm and the developer of the LEGO games TT Games, according to Cordon who read documents. He did say the documents did not have a date on them. It is possible they are no longer interested in selling the studios, while they were months or years ago.

Cordon did speculate the reason WarnerMedia would want to sell NetherRealm and TT Games is they no longer fit into WarnerMedia's plans. The Mortal Kombat film underperforming might have made the IP less attractive, while TT Games has been developing LEGO games. LEGO is an IP that WarnerMedia does not own.

WarnerMedia is merging with Discovery in a $43 billion merger to form Warner Bros. Discovery, which could complicate things. It could be a priority of WarnerMedia to sell off NetherRealm and TT Games before the merger is completed.

As always this should be treated as a rumor until an official announcement is made.

I don't really care who buys TT games, but I would rather someone other than the big 3 buy NetherRealm games if they need to be sold.

It would be kind of cool to see NetherRealm go indie.

Don't really care, just aslong as who ever buys them dont lock it out of the PC market.

Personally I'm more interested in TT Games. The games are great and i found they were a perfect not only to play with my kids when they were younger but also fun enough for adults to play too. I'd prefer Sony to look at that them but im afraid MSFT probably will....not because they want to, but because they have the money and can.

Between Sony and MS, I'd much rather like to see Sony buy NetherRelms. If Sony owned MK, I think that would push MS to go harder on Killer Instinct which would be great. If MS owned NetherRelms I'm not sure if MS would give enough love for KI or just end up mashing the two together and could just end up being messy.

Knowing that Sony will most likely locked out the next entry on PC? That would cause an upset. They mention they want to make another KI but they need to find a good enough developer for it.

It also wouldn't surprise me if Sony put in a serious bid. They've been investing significantly in the fighting game space recently and may want the opportunity to add one of the most popular ones to their first party lineup.

MS buying NetherRealm to make a game in a rival series to their own seems kind of silly. Now, if Microsoft wanted a team that could expand on Killer Instinct to include every IP they own (including Mortal Kombat characters, if they buy the studio) and give it a huge AAA focus like Smash Ultimate gets, that would be worthy of acquiring a new studio to handle.

Since the documents outlining potentially selling those studios haven't been released and Gordon only mentions selling the studios, we don't know if the documents also included any IP.
The calibre of any potential buyers and their level of interest and price paid would depend on what that answer was . and then in the case of a IP like Mortal Kombat that they own, the question would be are they willing to sell it separately.

MS for sure will pay them way more money than Sony.

It costs less to buy the new iteration of console every 7 years or so. Remember, that $500 machine will run games for the next 7 years, give or take one or two. You’re going to have to upgrade your PC a few times to make sure your PC isn’t struggling.

You only need to upgrade your PC once for it to run. Also you can choose to down scale settings if you choose to go cheaper on PC parts. Why would he need to upgrade his PC mulitple times in the same gen?

Your PC should last you an entire generation considered you built it to play that current gen games. All games in that gen are made to run on base console hardware so unless you are opting to play with Pro/X or Ultra settings than thats on you and the PC you built. Base console hardware does not improve during a generation which is the main focus for games. Games are better opitmised later down the road but the Hardware never changes. Also an i3 isnt recommended for gaming, not the Duel Cores anyway. Your 2015 build would struggle with running 8th gen games. You needed to go higher in parts in my opinion.

Everytime a new gen starts its best to spend alittle bit more so when the next gen after starts, your PC will be already ahead of its time. My i7 and 1080gpu still run games comfortable today and when it starts to struggle, i drop it from 4k to 1080p and it runs 60fps with everything on (except for Ray Tracing) as my GPU isnt designed for it.

The 9th gen has started and i am in no rush to upgrade as my PC is still very capable today.
