by William D'Angelo , posted on 11 December 2020 / 9,624 Views

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console with 1,630,941 units sold for the week ending November 28, according to VGChartz estimates. The sales figures for this week include Black Friday.

The PlayStation 5 is in its third week available in North America, Oceania, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea, and is in its second week in Europe and the rest of the world. The console sold an estimated 400,496 units to bring its lifetime sales to 3,031,824 units.

The Xbox Series X|S is in its third week worldwide and is the third best-selling console. The consoles sold an estimated 174,049 units to bring their lifetime sales to 1,619,407 units.

It should be noted the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are supply constrained in most markets, which will likely continue through early 2021.

The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 169,096 units, the Xbox One sold 91,437 units, and the Nintendo 3DS sold 4,882 units.

Nintendo Switch sales compared to the same week a year ago are down 256,918 units (-13.6%). The PlayStation 4 is down 1,213,427 units (-87.8%), the Xbox One is down 901,069 units (-90.8%), and the 3DS is down 69,491 units (-93.4%).

5 million more units until the switch outsells the 3ds. Thinking it's going to happen this calendar year. Unless stock is a lot more limited than I would assume.

Stock was definitely the bigger issue this month. Last November 2019 it sold 5% more than this November but Nintendo met demand in November 2019, proof of that is that there was no scalping at all on ebay in 2019 since it was easy to get a Switch at retail whenever you want. 2020 however despite selling around the same we had way more scalping and people willing to buy Switch's higher than retail price since the demand is far higher rn than the supply. Nintendo's lack of supply killed them, not demand since demand is way higher than last year.

Yeah well, the problem is the switch wasn’t selling half as well the entire year last year. There just wasn’t enough stock for the mega week.

Pokemon had a huge impact last year. Plus the Switch Lite going into the holidays.

Yess agreed those stock issues was brutal for Nintendo considering Japan is in bad shape now

Jeez. 400,000 PS5's vs 174,000 Xboxes. Not sure if Xbox just didn't produce enough units, or they are getting stomped by Sony already.

Week 47 total sales 6.9854.990, week 48 switch sold 1.630.941, total sales 70.920.531? ( 69.854.990 + 1.630.941 = 71.485.931 )

Congrats to Nintendo, absolute insane numbers. PS4 is still doing its thing being old now. Regarding the PS5 numbers, those are accurate, correct? They seem to be a bit low coming from Sony's expectations going with the PS5 hype and demand currently. I was expecting another 1+ million sales. Hmmm

They would have to hold stock back significantly to get higher sales week. If they are selling everything they can produce then you won't see significantly higher weeks for PS5 till next holiday (I suspect they or retailers may hold some units back for the week before Christmas, but probably won't see 1+million till black Friday week 2021)

As an example, if Sony is truly making 400k PS5 every week at the moment, that would mean they are projecting to sell well over 20 million in the first year (400k * 52 weeks plus the stock they produce before launch). More likely they will be producing around 250-300k per week atm, it's far more cost effective to increase production in steps through the year while they monitor the demand... if they over produce it's expensive to lower production rates only to have to raise them again.

@HigHurtenflurst Thank you for the breakdown friend. It does make sense for Sony to slow production to gauge consumer demand but I mean ... Sony should know full well PS5 demand is like nothing they ever seen before. Sony's stock is up due to PlaySation 5 demand and strong sales. Sony should have some indication that people want PS5s. Sony wants 10 million PS5s by this year according this article, I'm surprised VGChartz never reported on it. https://www.vg247.com/2020/07/15/ps5-production-doubles-10-million-end-of-2020/

  • I'm not sure how you would take it, but I believe a company as big as Sony can afford the production to have possibly 20 million PS5s in a year. Thats why 400k PS5s globally seems low to me coming from Sony. But as you said they could be holding stock back for December and possibly January.

@Highurtenflurst Thank you for the breakdown friend. I just thought that since Sony wants to at least have 10 million PS5s in production by this year alone, those numbers would higher. I don't think VGChartz allows for links in comments but on vg247, they reported Sony wants 10 million PS5s by this year. According to Bloomberb with 5 million they want to ship to retailers at the end of this year. But as you said, Sony could be holding stock for December and January potentially.

Thanks for the info, I found the articles. If true it seems like shipping is the main bottleneck rather than production, because if Sony met that target they should have had 6-7 million consoles manufactured before launch, but were still only expecting to ship 5 million of them in the quarter.

Still roughly in-line with what I was guessing for sales though, if they ship 5 million by the end of December, during a 7 week period for sales, the average weekly sales have to be less than 1 million. (with 3 million already sold we should expect an average of ~500k for next 4 weeks)

I would expect end of year sales to be approaching 5 million, which is 10% better than PS4.
