The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

PlayStation 4 Vs. Wii US:

Gap change in latest month: 77,989 – PS4

Total Lead: 8,319,923 – Wii

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 32,543,229

February 2020 is the 76th month that the PlayStation 4 has been available for in the US. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared with the Wii during the same timeframe. The PlayStation 4 has caught up to the Wii by 77,989 units and in the last 12 months outsold the Wii by 2.01 million units. The Wii currently leads by 8.32 million units.

Both consoles launched in November. The Wii launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 32.54 million units, while the Wii sold 40.86 million units during the same timeframe.

The Wii sold units 41.70 million lifetime in the US, therefore the PlayStation 4 needs to sell another 9.16 million units to outsell the Wii.

Will be a tough race. I think the PS4 will just barely fall short of the Wii in the US, but not by much.

I don't see Sony dropping the price now, that would just hamper the sales of the PS5 at this point in time. And right now, sales are dropping fast, essentially losing 100k a week globally per week, so it doesn't look like the PS4 will have that long legs, either.

I agree with Bofferbrauer2. PS4 will narrow the gap, but it won't pass the Wii in the end. XB1 has taken away too many of its potential sales in North America. Many of those people waiting for a cheap PS4 bought either an XB1 or a Switch.

Wii to win by about 3 million, but the legs of the PS4 have been impressive.
