The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

PS4 Vs. PS3 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 29,228 – PS3

Gap change over last 12 months: 292,647 – PS3

Total Lead: 247,488 – PS4

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 8,834,192

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 8,586,704

January 2020 is the 72nd month of the PlayStation 4 being on sale in Japan. The gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 29,228 units in the last month and in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 292,647 units in the last 12 months. The PlayStation 4 currently leads by just 247,488 units.

The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. The PlayStation 4 has sold 8.83 million units, while its predecessor the PlayStation 3 sold 8.59 million units.

The PS3 sold 10.47 million units lifetime in Japan. The PS4 needs to sell another 1.64 million units to outsell the PS3.

With the upcoming releases for this year, it might just best PS3 in Japan, but just by a slim margin...

Very much doubt it. PS3 will now enter it's holiday season and overtake the PS4. After that, PS3 will sail away since it still sold above 15k weekly in 2013, twice of what the PS4 is pulling.
