It looks like Sony has some good news to share with fans of their popular game, Killzone 2 .  The boys and girls over at Sony HQ just issued a press release announcing that the highly-anticipated and much-hyped shooter has reached the million sold milestone since it was released in February.

The article also mentioned strong sales of their flagship PlayStation 2 console, which seems to have benefited from the recent price-reduction, bolstering the company's profit margins.  Here's what they had to say:

"Following the revelation that Killzone 2 became the fastest SCEA title on PS3 to reach 500K sold, Sony today revealed that the critically acclaimed first-person shooter from Guerilla Games has sold over one million copies worldwide. The company pointed to the game as another example of an 'only on PlayStation experience," and noted that it will "continue to drive incentive for hardware sales throughout the year.'"

1 million, for an AAA title, considered a genuine "generation defining title", on tech side, with this kind of hype and anticipation, is pretty low, indeed

  • 0
highflyer19 (on 19 April 2009)

alright so this is my first post on the chartz, and all i wanna say is that im a huge ps3 fan, play games everyday, bought KZ2 the day it came out, and returned it the next week. ITS OVER RATED! the game looks amazing but thats it. it sucks. give it up its just another 1st person shooter that looks really good and plays just as good if not worse than any other 1st person shooter i've played.

  • 0
chaosdrk805 (on 19 April 2009)

Um it clearly says sold OVER 1 million. NPD already tracked it in U.S. at the end of of March at 623K. Thats just the U.S. You 360 xbots have to seriously stop with the hating.

  • 0
nomorehalo (on 19 April 2009)

While I'm not saying 1 million is a bad number for this game, I highly doubt Sony is satisfied with it when MGS4 can hit 3 million just as fast. Basically, Sony saying they are disappointed would be like telling potential buyers; "Yeah, we may not try this again".

  • 0
Apollian (on 19 April 2009)

2 million is ok, but for the amount of money Sony invested in this game I'd have expected a lot more. I'm hoping it will have good slow legs like LBP.
still, hopefully Sony will put more into gameplay than Graphics next time around.

Munkeh111 (on 19 April 2009)

Well over 900k people have played Warzone, so I doubt that 90% of owners are playing online. 2.3m people have played warzone on Gears of War 2, and that has sold nearly 5m. I don't know what Sony are talking about, but only selling 1m makes no sense, I think about 1.5m is more sensible (given the fact that PS3 has free online) so I see no problem with VGC's figures, though I am sure ioi is looking into it now

  • 0
cleaner475 (on 19 April 2009)

The only reason Killzone 2 hasn't done 2 million so far is due to the falling adoption of software in the american markets

who cares, i just peed on the wii.

  • 0
EatAbullet (on 19 April 2009)

Personally I think that it took too long to sale a million.......For a game that supposedly was a flagship title.

  • 0
Gnizmo (on 19 April 2009)

@Max, I won't pretend to know how the tracking can be that off. Sony gives shipment data 90% of the time. The other 10% is followed involves a direct reference to NPD et all. NPD, Chart Track, and everyone else are just making extremely educated guesses at what the actual number of units sold is. Shipment data trumps that everytime. Show me some evidence that says this is either old shipment data, or not actually shipped and I will take you seriously.

@Makingmusic, I recall that, but the number seems extremely odd all things considered now. They would have to have 400k (supposing our numbers are right) sitting around the retail chain since launch. That just doesn't add up for me. A third of the units initially shipped with the game not having sold in over a month seems like a very bad thing.

  • 0
Cobretti2 (on 19 April 2009)

Only 1million sice Feb? so slooooow?

Talk about a flop. This game fails.

/end sarcasm

however Insert Wii game sold 1million since Feb

damn it it flopped.

What no end of sarcasm?

I guess games these days are not allowed to sell slowly on the Wii because they sure as hell would sell quicker on the HD twins.

  • 0
makingmusic476 (on 19 April 2009)

I don't think this is sold-to-retailers. For retailers, they should've broken a million day one, as they had 1.1 million retailer pre-orders.

This is probably a rough estimation of sold-to-consumer sales best on whatever means they have access to.

  • 0

Just over a million should be a disappointment for Sony! This games considering the current PS3 installed base should have done at least 2.5 millions by now.

  • 0
Daddo Splat (on 19 April 2009)

and it does say has sold over 1 million since its release. is 1.4 million over 1 million???

@Max King of the Wild save it dude, it would be best to just ignore the forums completely. It's just a waste of time, really.

  • 0
Max King of the Wild (on 18 April 2009)

hey guys, the day npd releases its numbers (which coincide with vgc's numbers) which when combined with chart tracks numbers puts kz2 over 1 million sold Sony coincidentally realeases a statement that they sold one million WW. IMAGINE THAT! oh but wait these must be shipped which would leave about 750k on shelves making those companies overtracking the game a whopping 660k WW at 66% overtracked something thats never happened in the history of the industry except with one of the most hated games.

  • 0
Max King of the Wild (on 18 April 2009)

gnizmo, how the fuck is npd, chart track, vg and gfk over 50% off? these numbers are SOLD. These numbers came with npd report. its silly to think otherwise

  • 0
The (on 18 April 2009)

FACT: Nobody here knows in detail the data Sony is using to claim 1 milliom sold copies WW. It could very likely be data from KZ2's release date to MARCH. VGC up to this point has tracked sales in the current month, which I doubt it's the same case with SCEA. Either way, nobody knows for sure to be calling "overtrack" over here. This just proves the widespread sony hate in this children-infested joke of a forum.

  • 0
Gnizmo (on 18 April 2009)

Max, what evidence is there to contradict this statement? Sony says we shipped X amount, and that means X amount is the number in the wild. Yes, those tracking agencies are wrong if they contradict this information. There is no more definitive source for shipment nmbers than the company that actually ships them. If you want to say the PR guy had wrong numbers then you might have a case. As it stands now though you are essentially countering hard facts with fanboy non-sense.

  • 0
Max King of the Wild (on 18 April 2009)

^ yeah, too many trolls clicking it to go 'OVERTRACKED!!!!' without looking at the evidence.

tyig - obviously to have npd numbers back up their claims.

  • 0
Max King of the Wild (on 18 April 2009)

Maynard - no to sold through. this report came with npd. obviously npd numbers put it past 1million. add in canada and mexico along with 2 more weeks since npd covers up to march and you get 1.4.

moar ban hammer please

  • 0
Godot (on 18 April 2009)

Whatever the real sales are, we can say that the games has been a little bit more successful than Street Fighter IV and slightly less successful than Resident Evil 5. Of course, both games made Capcom more money than Sony since they are also on 360 but I really can't say that K2 was a huge success with that in mind.

  • 0
tyig (on 18 April 2009)

Yeah, but the Sony fanboys don't trust Sony numbers, they trust vgchartz'

  • 0
Soleron (on 18 April 2009)

@XxXProphecyXxX

No. The VGC figures are wrong. K2 has just (yesterday or something) sold its 1 millionth unit. Halo Wars sold its one millionth unit officially a while ago and is therefore

Company figures are more reliable than VGC. (or at least, the actual figure will never be more than they quote. They do have incentive to spin it the other way.)

  • 0
XxXProphecyXxX (on 18 April 2009)

@Migasuk

lol it says it sold over a million which it did it's a 1.4m and you said on your post that halowars which is @ 1.1m sold more than KZ2....1.1m is more than 1.4 now ehhh right.....

  • 0
Maynard_Tool (on 18 April 2009)

Ok quick question.... 1 million WW? To retailers?

  • 0

killzone2 is awesome it should have sold even more.
i think the bad controls turned people off.

  • 0

  • 0

It wasnt even a HALO WARS killer. Sure it's a good game but doesn't begin to fill out the huge expectations fanboys were promising.

XxXProphecyXxX LOL

well, first of all, next time when you mention someone's nickname at least copy it, second didn't occur to you that that numbers from this article came directly from sony which i do believe is a more realistic source than the numbers in this website? well if not than you are more dumb than me or you r trying to fool only urself.

  • 0
XxXProphecyXxX (on 18 April 2009)

@Tyig

Sony didn't even announce that R2 sold over 1.5m arldy does that mean Halowars outsold it??? IDIOT

  • 0

@tyig... Maybe Halo Wars sharply dropped in sales thereafter??? According to this site, K2 sold more...

  • 0

XxXProphecyXxX , how can killzone sell more when MS annouced that Halo Wars sold 1 million weeks before, Sony said Killzone did?

  • 0
XxXProphecyXxX (on 17 April 2009)

LOL @ migasuke

did you even finished school? halo wars sold better than killzone 2 while KZ2 is sitting on 1.4m and halo wars 1.1m? are you really that dumb?

  • 0
Naraku_Diabolos (on 17 April 2009)

Leo-j is right as well. No matter what data other websites get (like VGChartz) with sales data of hardware and software, Sony will refuse to say it themselves that they are doing horribly. Why do you think Sony always states that they SOLD a lot of hardware/software units when the data on this website has it being a lot lower? It's because Sony likes to state that they SOLD their hardware/software to retailers rather than the consumer.

  • 0
sharky974 (on 17 April 2009)

Come on, the game bombed and nobody here is admitting it. I'm tired of all these biased articles in the press acting like KZ2 sold well. A million shipped worldwide after well over a month given the hype is pretty weak. Like most PS3 games it didn't sell bad enough to be a total flop, yet was very underwhelming.

Gears of War sold 1.8 million just in the USA it's first two months, when the 360 only had a 2.9 million install base when it first arrived..

  • 0
jonop (on 17 April 2009)

I don't think anyoone can tell for sure the number sold to consumers so i think it means to retailers which ever company says it.

  • 0
vgno (on 17 April 2009)

nope, nintendo like sony = to costumers, ms = retailers.

  • 0
zordiark (on 17 April 2009)

Hey Sony, stop the FPS games already, give me some JRPGs...
FPS don't sell hardware... RPG do
RPG, RPG, RPG... wahahahahahaha!

if you only released GT5 from the PS3 launch, hardware sales won't be a problem

i mean c'mon, this is the first time that PS came out w/o GT game...
GT5 could be a GT4 but upgraded graphics, it will do fine...

then rename your masterpiece as GT6... (grasp)

  • 0
KillerMan (on 17 April 2009)

NDP shows that KZ2 has sold around 600k in NA alone. I really can't believe that they have sold less in Europe when it is strongest region for Sony and KZ1 was succes here.

Late announcement??

  • 0
Sithaboveall (on 17 April 2009)

kowenicki says:
Drive more hardware sales? Is that a joke? Sales are down YOY for the PS3 in both February and March by quite a margin. There is no evidence that it drove any sales whatsoever.

maybe the sales would've been that much worse if KZ2 didnt come out....?

i havent gotten it yet, but i'll probably get it used from gamefly so i dont contribute to the sales of it. :P

  • 0

  • 0
dark_gh0st_b0y (on 17 April 2009)

well, there's a huge difference between 1m and 1.39, something like 390,000 copies o.0

  • 0
Zkuq (on 17 April 2009)

Could be that they're telling this one million thing too late and mean it's at LEAST one million but could be more... But yeah, sounds overtracked. However, it's hard to believe it could be that much; I think this should be looked into very carefully. How are the bundles counted? Does Sony count them (this time)?

A very strange case. All we can be sure about is that Killzone 2 has been pretty successful so far.

  • 0
K-DOGG (on 17 April 2009)

@Onna76
I'm half way there with you. I don't mind FPS,but SONY needs to show me it's true power and give me my RPG's. I'm going through withdraw. LOL
oh and buy the way, congrats KZ2. the game is beast.

  • 0
*~Onna76~* (on 17 April 2009)

I only want RPG´s on the PS3, I don´t give a rat ass about FPS.

  • 0
GameAnalyser (on 17 April 2009)

it's a good job. it wasn't a Halo killer neither a GeoW killer..we are not talking of gross here anymore....one of another quality s/w budding up across ps3.. KZ2 did the job fine even without a decent fanbase like Geow and Halo had from their original. Still this fps managed to rake in near one million in a week's time... great job. Well Japanese release will close it on to 2 million from april 23rd onwards. when will americans join the Japanese to support ps3?
yes it's about a matter of few months when wii and 360 crazy driven fans there just consider buying one.
Now KZ3 is the lucky iteration. all credits to KZ2.

They say over 1 million WW ... if 1.4 million sold was true that means about 1.5 million would be shipped at least ... Would Sony not have said 1.5 million rather than 1 million?

Probably overtracked.

  • 0
Infamy79 (on 16 April 2009)

ssj12 - It says 1 million worldwide, not US only. If it was truly at 1.4mil as VGC has it then they would be talking about 1.5 million worldwide as there would be more than 100k on shelves. Overtracked unfortunately.

  • 0
crumas2 (on 16 April 2009)

I'm curious to see if KZ2 sparks a trend of shooter fans acquiring PS3s, or if it has more of an effect of drawing existing PS3 owners in the shooter realm. Yeah, COD is very popular already, but it's not like a Halo or GeoW in theme or approach, and besides Resistance it's about the only decent online shooter for PS3. Perhaps KZ2 will accomplish both and make the PS3 known as more of an option for shooter fans. The only weakness I see is in no split-screen, limiting the "Halo LAN Party" effect.
