Nintendo Unveils Newest Console-Portable Hybrid, Nintendo Switch - News

by Evan Norris , posted on 20 October 2016 / 11,930 Views

Nintendo has at long last revealed details about its newest video game system, known formerly as "NX" and now revealed as Nintendo Switch.

According to Nintendo's YouTube site, Switch provides "single and multiplayer thrills at home" and allows gamers to "play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose."

Nintendo promises the Switch will combine the mobility of a handheld with the power of a home gaming system. Switch launches in March 2017.

That just looks so perfect to fit into my gaming patterns, home console on the couch, great looking handheld... albeit quite large, noticed no one putting that in their pocket in the video, walking about with it in their hands all the time. but yeah, damn that looks awesome.

Might be just to have it visible all the time during this commercial.

my thoughts exactly. a lot of people having complaining that its not a dedicated home console, but for someone like me I love the idea of being able to chill on the couch holding it, holding it at the store, and then if I want to get cozy hooking it up to the TV

this is perfect for those of who take our gaming fairly easy/relaxed

exactly MDS, you can look at this system and think... for someone who doesn't get dedicated time to sit down and just play games in one place, it's perfect and.... it's easily the nicest looking graphics ever seen on a standalone portable device (with traditional controls built in)

That Super Mario clip at 2:16 graphics actually look like Unreal Engine 4 videos people were posting online. That looks great and a great idea! Gosh I hope it works!

Yeah, I said the same thing. It's definitely unreal.

So it's a hybrid of sorts. Good choice. Nintendo is playing to it's own strenghts with this: just one platform to develop for will hopefully kill the droughts.

Going by the preview they have Take-Two, they are the ones who basically took the wait and see approach, on the bandwagon so it may mean good things from the other western 3rd parties.

Reeeeeeaally glad they nailed the name and the logo. I feel like this is something the public can quickly understand and get behind, so good job on that Nintendo. Now we watch to see what the pre-order numbers will be like (we can track that, right?)

VGC only tracks software pre-orders. And only in the US. And they're also the most innacurate of the bunch.

I have to disagree on the name though. It's not bad, but not good either. Nintendo X/Cross/Fusion were better imo.

Thank you 4 answer. I was kinda hoping their would be data outside of VGC (like Nintendo officially), but I haven't done my homework so I have no idea if that is a possibility.

My biggest question is this replacing the 3DS or will that console see its own successor?

  • +4
SpaceLegends Kerotan (on 20 October 2016)

I was wondering that as well. It would seem that this new take on a console could (and perhaps should) stand as an upgrade to both the Wii U and the 3DS, and unify Nintendo's home and portable platforms.

  • +8
Darwinianevolution Kerotan (on 20 October 2016)

Considering it works as a handheld, I don't see any reason to make a direct 3DS successor.

Maybe Nintendo are seeing if this takes off. If it fails they might release a 3DS successor and see how that does.

Ljink96 Kerotan (on 20 October 2016)

Some things that Iwata said are now coming to light. Initially, I think the games will coexist. Until 3DS sales give out.

  • +4
mountaindewslave Kerotan (on 20 October 2016)

Nintendo almost certainly will be aiming for a combined unified library now. They have had to put so much work in the past into handling two systems constantly.

There will be no 3DS successor IMO

the 3DS however will probably be supported for a few more years, as long as its profitable

  • +4
Kerotan Kerotan (on 20 October 2016)

Makes sense. The only way I can see a dedicated 3DS handheld successor is if this fails. Otherwise they'll be happy to let this be it going forward.

Same here. As of right now, I'm on board. This thing seems really cool. If it's the successor for both their handheld and home console then it's probably a day 1 for me because software support won't be a question.
