This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the 7th generation platforms with the 8th generation platforms. The two charts compare the home consoles as well as handhelds.

The 8th generation has struggled to keep up with the 7th generation. After closing the gap slightly in November it has grown again in December. Poor Wii U sales compared to the Wii is the main reason the 8th gen is behind. The gap increased by 2.47 million units.

Yes, the Wii U is pulling the the other two down. PS4 and Xbox one doing all the work this gen. I didn't realise until just know how bad the handhelds are doing this gen, very sad to see...

Yeah, just remove the +10 million of WiiU consoles sold. That will surely stop this "pulling down" phenomena you speak of.

Not sure why I got -2. I'd much rather hear opinions on how Wii U is holding back sales of PS4 and X1. Seems more like less people in general are buying consoles now that smart phones and tablets can do video games.

I'm sorry by pulling down I mean not doing as well as the PS4 and Xbox One... Maybe that was the wrong choice of word.

No surprise for handhelds. PSV is pretty much a non-factor.

Considering that the DS sold 154m compared to the 3ds's 58m so far, it is responsible for almost 100m unit drop between the generations, While the Psp sold 80 million compared to the Vitas 13 causing a 67m unit gap between generations.

I'm not saying that the Vita isn't a big reason for the generation gap, but the DS to 3DS still causes a bigger split in the numbers.

Technically, when the NX launches, we will be in the 9th generation.

8th Gen should catch up segnificantley in the same time frame ounce the wii bubble bursted, but then again by that time we could allready see new consoles. 7th Gen really wasnt that great if you consider it lasted 8 years. PS4 and PS5 should easily sell 300 Million units by that time
