7th Gen vs 8th Gen - Aligned Sales Comparison - April 2015 Update - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 03 June 2015 / 7,137 Views

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the 7th generation platforms with the 8th generation platforms. The two charts compare the home consoles as well as handhelds.

This first chart compares aligned home console sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.

The 8th generation has struggled to keep up with the 7th generation and in April 2015 the gap only continued to grow. Poor Wii U sales compared to the Wii is the main reason the 8th gen is behind. The gap grew by 1.41 million units.

The 7th generation home consoles in their first 18 months sold 49.13 million units, while the 8th generation consoles have sold 40.81 million units. The 7th gen currently leads by 8.32 million units.

7th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 49,133,354

8th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 40,810,047

Total Lead: 8,323,307 – 7th Generation

This second chart is comparing aligned handheld sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the DS and PSP combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

The gap between the two generation of handhelds has grown in favor of the 7th generation. The gap has grown so much that the 7th generation has nearly doubled the sales of the 8th generation.

The 7th generation handhelds in their first 41 months sold 106.39 million units, while the 8th generation handhelds have sold 53.93 million units. The 7th generation grew its lead by 2.20 million units and currently leads by 52.46 million units.

7th Generation Total Combined Handheld Sales: 106,387,112

8th Generation Total Combined Handheld Sales: 53,928,626

Total Lead: 52,458,486 – 7th Generation

The reason next gen is down is because of the Wii U. The XB1 has a nice gap between it and the 360, while the PS4 is crushing the PS3.

You are forgetting about poor 3DS sales because the DS was such a sales beast.

Wut? Where are the Vita sales? I think those are the 3DS sales alone.

People should realize just how much the expanded market the Wii catered to inflated 7th gen (specifically the Wii) sales figures. That's where the contraction lies; few, if any of those consumers have bought/will buy consoles this generation.
