Bullet Run is a free-to-play FPS set in the near future developed by Sony Online Entertainment. The setting has you as a contestant in a life-or-death TV reality show. Your goal is to not just survive, but to elimate the other contestants with style so you increase your fame level.
The core gameplay may be an FPS, but the heart of the game is all in the customizations. Different costumes and accessories will give your character bonuses that affect gameplay. These can give you experience level bonuses or other stat buffs. Your weapons are also highly customizable with different grips that alter your gun’s weight or barrels that alter their power.
Every option has a pro and con balance you have to consider. You can add a laser pointer on your gun that greatly helps your accuracy, but this also makes it much easier for other players to find where you are. On the flipside, you can equip your gun with a silencer. This will prevent your character from popping up on the other players’ radars, but it lowers your gun’s power. There are over a thousand combinations and you will have to experiment to find the loadout that works best for you.
Like I said, it is less about killing often but killing well. You will earn much more experience if you taunt your opponent after you drop them. They leave you vulnerable for a bit but the ‘crowd’ loves it and you will reap the rewards for your showmanship. Other rewarding activities are headshots and defeating someone with their own weapon. The more stylish your kills the more you build up your heat meter.
The heat meter is really a measure of how many fans you have at the moment, the more fans the more skills you gain access to. These skills are like special moves that your character can perform to get even more bonuses from kills.
It sure doesn’t feel like a free to play game. Good and tight controls, quick respawns, and a massive amount of options. There is a nemesis system in place when you die that rewards you for taking out the jerk that took you down. The massive variety in character models and accessories made it quite simple to pick my revenge target out of the crowd.
