Legitimately one of the most interesting series to follow.
Wii is going to take a huge lead next year and the year after, but as we all know, it died pretty fast. PS4 will gain on it fast after that probably. Will be an interesting battle to see if the Wii holds on, or if PS4 takes the ultimate lead. Personally I think they'll end up about the same.
Official Wii from shipment number from Nintendo: 20.13 million at 31 December 2007.
Wii sales number in this article at the end of December: 20.98 million
So it sold more units than were shipped? Right...
LoL most of wii buyers were casuals, yet the ps4 still comes close for being the strongest console
The graph is incorrectly labelled...
So the Wii shipped 20m but sold 21m according to VGC. The Wii should still be slightly ahead but the chart is wrong.
Wii was a beast. Excellent sales for Nintendo.
Amazing sales from both consoles.
Wii died a quick death in the end, while the PS4 will sell for much longer. Don't see it having problems going past 100m.
Go Ps4 .. Buying one in a month or two :-) but i also love my wii O:-)
A fight of 2 titans! It's refreshing to watch.
this is the chart to watch this gen by the way. it will prove what the upper limit of a traditional "gamer" console is. i do not think ps4 will outperform wii lifetime, it will probably do about ps3 numbers. some people have been pretty bullish, with 170m!1!!! but that's just bs.
I'm expecting it to match the Wii, mainly because it will be the defacto "core" console globally.
How high the PS4 will go will depend on how long the gen lasts. But it will most certainly have much stronger legs than the Wii did.
Go Wii!

There is still something wrong with the chart. Wii total sales used in this chart: 20.98 million. Total sales of the Wii according VGCharts by the week ending January 5th 2008: 19.89 million. Don't know where the more than one million extra sales came from?
Simple typo I would say
People want to claim that PS4 is fastest selling console so bad, the tears are delicious
PS4 is the fastest selling PlayStation console in history, beating even the PS2 which is THE BEST selling console IN HISTORY. I love Nintendo too but you are just wrong.
The wii sold so well because everything just went right for it.
(1) Least expensive next gen console at the time.
(2) Innovative motion controls that got Grandma/Grandpa and Moms/Dads into it as well as kids of all ages.
(3) The first time Nintendo did backwards compatibility and they did it well. Old School gamers like me finally put NES/SNES/Genesis in guest room and played on a 21st century NES controller (wii mote held sideways).
(4) Wii Fit came at the perfect time. We saw soccer moms pick up the wii as well as Gyms, Retirement homes & youth centers.
But wiiU has none of that. I love my WiiU but personally would have loved them to put at least DVD playback and I'll tell you why....it's the gamepad. They have that tech there and if they added DVD playback and stream capability to the tablet then that would be something this tablet can do that no others can. Sure we got netflix but if I could also have my daughter watch DVD's on the gamepad it would save me a huge headache and give Nintendo something no other console has and no other tablet.
@Roadshow: How is he wrong? He is claiming the Wii is the fastest selling console of all time, and for the first few years of its life, it was. Yes, the PS2 had more overall sales in the end, but comparing the total numbers and the speed at which they arrived are two different things. That being said, your post is all over the place, man. Get your thoughts in order, then come back and try again.
@SjOne: It's gonna happen. You see that spike at the end for PS4 sales? Remember how Wii interest fell off the face of the planet andnever came back because it was sold on a ggimmick? Mark my words, it's only a matter of time before side-by-side sales show a massive favour in PS4.
