Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

This week we will be looking at the top 10 selling Sonic games (minus collections and Olympic games). Last week we looked at the top 10 selling LEGO games and the week before that the top 10 selling Grand Theft Auto games.

Top 10 Selling Sonic the Hedgehog Titles

Looking at the top 10 bestselling Sonic games, three of the titles were released in the 1990’s, five were released in the 2000’s, and two were released in 2010’s.

The three titles released in the 1990’s sold a combined 14.06 million units or an average of 4.69 million units on average per title.  The five titles released in the 2000’s sold a combined 20.43 million units or an average of 4.09 million units on average per title. The two titles released in the 2010’s sold a combined 6.15 million units or 3.08 million units on average per title.

The top 10 bestselling Sonic games sold a combined 40.64 million units. The top two titles sold more than five million units and the top five titles sold more than four million units. The top seven sold more than three million units and every game in the top 10 sold more than 2.68 million units.

Sonic the Hedgehog was Sega’s mascot for all of its consoles. The Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Sonic games were by far the most popular Sonic titles on a Sega platform. However, when Sega dropped out of the hardware race and released their games on multiple consoles Sonic games sold nearly as well as the Genesis / Mega Drive games.

Top 10 Selling Sonic the Hedgehog Titles

The top 10 bestselling Sega games as a graph really shows how the two titles sold above the rest. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 despite just being on the Genesis / Mega Drive is the bestselling game in the franchise. Also the figure doesn’t include sales in collection titles or sales on Xbox Live or PSN.

Since going third party the franchise has sold well on multiple platforms, including the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, as well as the Gameboy Advance and DS. There have been a handful of titles that have been exclusive, all for Nintendo platforms. Sonic Advance for the Gameboy Advance, Sonic Rush for the DS, and outside the top 10 a couple titles for the Wii.

Here are the sales outside the top 10: The franchise has sold 105.14 million units at retail worldwide, while the bulk of the sales, 52.9 million units, were from North America. 35.24 million of the games sold were from Europe, while 5.17 million of the units sold were in Japan.

Its pretty clear that Sonic 3, Sonic CD and Sonic & Knuckles data is just missing. Those sold 3-5 million each. I was reading that Sonic CD sales were literally 1:1 with Sega CD hardware.

You do a top 10 article on Sonic sales and you don't have accurate numbers to make a worthwhile list and didn't even include games like Sonic 3.

Sonic is huge on digital platforms.
Sonic 2 has 600k on XBLA alone, probably ~300-400k on PSN and about a million on VC.

I always have considered Sonic 2 the best. Loved playing 2 player split screen with my sister. Also enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the GC a lot!
