Top 10 in Sales - Sega Games - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 22 May 2012 / 13,093 Views

Welcome to the ‘Top 10’ weekly feature. Each week we will be taking a look at the top 10 selling games in a particular genre, platform, most recent month, even sprinkling in the top 10 selling games from a past year. All sales specified will be worldwide, unless stated otherwise.

In the last three weeks, we have looked at the top 10 selling games published by the big three – Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. This week we will be continuing the same thing by taking a look at the top 10 bestselling games published by Sega, including games that were bundled. If there is a particular top 10 you want to see leave a comment and it may be featured in a future top 10.

Top 10 Selling Sega Games

Looking at the top 10 bestselling games published by Sega, all 10 of the games either star Sonic, or is a playable character. Having said that four of the top 10 games star Sonic as the main character, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Rush, and Sonic Heroes. The other games either feature him as a playable character, or are a compilation of several games.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games have sold a combined 12.8 million units for the Wii and DS, making it the bestselling game published by Sega. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games have sold a combined 7.51 million units for the Wii and DS.

The top 10 games sold a combined 42.37 million units. The six games released for the current generation, Wii, DS and Xbox 360 sold a combined 26.13 million units. The two games released for the previous generation were both for the PlayStation 2 and sold a combined 5.86 million.  The two games for the fourth generation, Sega Genesis, sold a combined 10.37.

Top 10 Selling Sega Games

Taking a look at the top 10 bestselling games published by Sega as a bar graph shows that sales quickly drop and level off around the three million mark. As a matter of fact looking outside the top 10, you have to go to number 22 to find a game that has sold less than two million units. So while they may not reached the ten million mark for one game on one platform, they do have 69 games that have sold one million units or more.

As a side note for those who are interested here are the sales for the video game consoles released by Sega. The Genesis sold 28.54 million units worldwide, the GameGear 10.62 million units, the Saturn 8.82 million units, and the Dreamcast 8.2 million units.

Also here are the bestselling Sonic games that didn’t make the top 10 list released for the Genesis or its peripherals the Sega CD and Sega 32X. Sonic & Knuckles sold 1.83 million units worldwide, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sold 1.76 million units, and Sonic CD sold 1.50 million units.

Such a spectacular developer with such poor sales. How can people have such awful taste in video games?

Did no one buy Sonic the hedgehog 3?

4 of the games on this list sold well primarily because of a Nintendo IP and another was heavily bundled with the 360. I'm not sure about Sonic 1 and 2, but I believe those were heavily bundled games as well.

Hence, this list doesn't mean much.

wow.. i really dont understand why Sonic 3 was the worst selling of the 3 original sonic games. Maybe it was later in the console cycle than i thought, or maybe the advertisement wasnt as good.
It really is odd to me.

I believe Sonic 1 and 2 were heavily bundled.

This is why people should give Nintendo more respect. They know how to keep a franchise critically and commercially viable for 25+ years.

How about a top 10 list of Sega published games that doesn't have sonic in it. Now that would be interesting

Sega should be offended that 3 of their top 5 sellers (and there number 1) came via mario, and he quickly surpassed what many people feel like is segas best game in sonic 2, a game that has MANY years over.

i remember sonic 1 and 2 being bundled a lot, actually they didn't have any game bundled for the first 2-3 years then they chose sonic, then sonic 2, then 6 in 1 cartridge and i think
even vectorman for a little bit. I don't even remember sonic 3 being bundled at all.

Hmm one reason i dont like this poll is that i dont believe the mega drive/ genesis games have been properly tracked, if sonic 1 sold 4.34 million units and sonic 2 sold 6.03 million units it would stand to reason sonic 3 would be somewhere around these figures probably closer to sonic 2 considering the larger install base, but instead it has apparently sold less than 2.83 million units.

im really not convinced

I find it hilarious that nearly half of these are Mario games and only two of them are on Sega platforms.
