No new games this week, as 'GTAIV' Launches, and 'Lost Cities' battles 'Ikaruga' for top position (unless you count Uno Arcade Unlocks)
5/03/08 by Benjamin Schlichter
With Grand Theft Auto IV launching this week everywhere in the West, the question was: how would XBLA Games fare with such a juggernaught being released? The answer is that the market was mostly unphased from the launch, dropping a mild 10%, primarily due to recent launches having typical drops, and a lack of "fresh blood" onto the Arcade marketplace.
However, there is one interesting non-Arcade piece of news: using MyGamerCard.Net Leader traffic, and using the most recent daily online numbers for COD4 and Halo 3, we can determine that roughly 2.1 million+ users have been online this week to play GTAIV, pointing towards atleast 3.5 million sales of GTAIV for the 360 thus far this week. Very impressive.
As for Arcade news, there's very little:
- Mr Driller Online finished it's first full month on the charts. The first 2 weeks for the game were very impressive, but bombed afterwards due to horrible reviews and poor multiplayer intergration. MDO finished with a paltry 4.95 multiplier (mind you, 80% of that was from the first 2 weeks, which is rather bad).
- Lost Cities saw a decent 95% boost this week. This is an average boost, and with the entire market being down slightly, this would point to somewhat good legs for LC.
- Catan saw a healthy 20% increase thanks to the launch of Lost Cities. It's increased sales 2 weeks in a row - showing a strong tie between the release of new Card games, and the health of the market.

Wits & Wagers
Is your XBLA Wednsday game! 800 MSP, and somewhat anticipated by some. It'll feature XBL Vision Support, and Big Button Controller (ala Scene It?) support as well. 1-4 players offline, 2-6 players online. Should be a neat game

One more thing, do you data for the games not included in the top 100? It would be nice to be able to see them
Cool, I hope W&W is as good as it looks.
Interesting, would be nice to hear those XBO sales especially when some cult flops are going to get another chance for recognition. I just hope that the effect of reviews plays a greater role on sales, and its showing more and more on XBLA
I use a basket of ways to get my sales numbers. But a good bit of the source comes from MyGamerCard.Net and their leaderboards, and such.
And for the moment, I don't have XBO sales. I might be teaming up with a website or two in the future, and could possibly bring those sales numbers (as well as WiiWare and PSN) eventually.
Sales are pretty good i guess. Youre right about Ikaruga though, doesnt have staying power unfortunately, but if it continues to sell steady then who knows it may hit big
This may have been asked a lot, but where do you get these numbers from, also do you have XBOX Originals sales?
Yay N+ is still holding some decent sales :)
All I've heard is "soon", ie, the next 2-3 weeks.
It is strange that MS are not using the Arcade Hits program more than they do. With no release this week it would have been a perfect oportunity to add a game to the list. All the Arcade Hits games sell well and there are loads of games that sales would benifit from being added them.
Have you heard any rumours as to when Wits and Wagers is coming out?
Coca-Cola -
Ikaruga is a great game. That's why it sold 23,000+ copies in 3 days. The issue with Ikaruga, as with Rez HD - both games are very niche. Not every consumer on the market likes Shmups, and every other verticle/horizontal shooter. It's not a big market. Because of that, titles of that genre are very frontloaded - look at Omega 5 and Triggerheart Exelica. Both had good openings (6,500-7,500) and decent 1st full weeks, but were DOA afterwards. Why? Not everyone likes those sorts of games. Galaga is about the only one that many recognize as a popular V-shooter...And sold over 250k on XBLA (however, the other, better, ones are $10. Which could have an effect).
So niche gaming on 360 does well, but is also short-lived, even if it's an uber-game.
However, XBLA does reward diversity and innovation - just look at the numbers for Brain Challenge and N+ both games have done superb. Why? Platforming and challenge-type games can appeal to more than the Japanese V-shooter fan...And since the 360's userbase is mostly American and European, those games tend to do better.
Ikaruga is a great game people. why is it dropping so fast?
^^iron man made 38m so far so it's a great weekend for entertainment.
Can't wait till the numbers come out for 360. Can GTA4 sell 4m copies in 7 days?
If xbox arcade titles are mostly unphased, what hope is there for iron man?
