Summary

Suikoden IV is inspired by an actual Chinese tale in which 108 ordinary people come together from different backgrounds to do great things. In Suikoden IV, players step into the shoes of a young hero who obtains the Rune of Punishment and follows his path into a strange and fascinating world filled with huge ships, beautiful islands and vast oceans.

A deep RPG story awaits gamers who are ready for an epic 3D adventure. For the first time in the series' history, Suikoden IV will feature full voice-overs for many of the characters in the game. Navigating through numerous mysterious islands, players will collect party members and build a home base for their crew. The drama escalates as the characters engage in heated one-on-one battles, party battles and group battles, including ship-to-ship and army battles with countless island enemies. The new dynamic camera system in Suikoden IV heats up the action by presenting the conflicts from multiple angles. With dozens of playable characters including ones returning from previous adventures, and the return of numerous fun mini-games such as fishing and dice games, RPG fans will have their hands full in Suikoden IV.

Perhaps the worst RPG in a solid series, Suikoden III was an extraordinary game, which had set my expectations very high for this one only to be let down by its mediocrity. Suikoden IV is not a bad a game, it’s just that Suikoden III took the series from solid to higher plateau of greatness and Suikoden IV brings the series back down to earth.

Gameplay: 6.0- There are 108 characters to collect as always…but it is a drag to do so because the sea faring in this title is the worst mechanic of travel ever used in an RPG period. The combat system is solid and the few times I encountered ship battles I had a bit of fun. TOO MUCH random battling hurts the score a bit.

Graphics: 7.0-Solid looking characters that animate terribly (main character runs akwardly), bland environments, either my memory fails me or I remember Suikoden III looking better .

Music: 6.5- Not one! Not even one memorable tune...

Story: 7.5 –Konami knows how to tell a war story and how to get you interested. Konami however forgot how to develop characters and the whole mute main character thing has to stop, Suikoden III took 20 steps forwards with its tale, Suikoden IV takes 21 back!

Addictiveness: 5.0-It has a new game plus mode that allows you to keep some of your items for a second playthrough though the game doesn’t merit such replay value.

Overall: 6.5- Mundane describes Suikoden IV best, it is not a bad game but it fails to do anything in any category above average, a disappointment after the great Suikoden III.

Not as good as the previous Suikoden games, but still a nice one. I enjoyed the story, which had much more potential. Better if played along with Suikoden Tactics.

This game shows that, even when Konami does its best to ruin a game, if it's a Suikoden, it'll always end being better that the majority of games. When I look to this game, I can't believe some of the decisions Konami did. 4 characters party? Sailing? Characters with zero history? Very Short? And, even with all this, it has its great moments, it has Snowe, and, even though this game disappointed me a lot, I've still won it twice, and I've still enjoyed it a lot. 7/10
