Summary

Pepsi Invaders is an advergame for the Atari 2600 platform. This game was developed by Atari at the request of Coca-Cola for them to give to their Atlanta, Georgia employees.

The game is a parody of the popular Space Invaders game. In this game, instead of rows of aliens attempting to land, each row consisted of the letters P E P S I, followed by an alien. The command ship that flew across the top of the screen at regular intervals was changed into a Pepsi logo.

Unlike the original Space Invaders game, the player in Pepsi Invaders had unlimited lives. But the game was timed, the player only had three minutes to shoot as many of the enemies as possible and complete as many levels as possible. Once the three minutes was up the game would end and the message Coke Wins would flash across the top of the screen. Also, unlike the original game, the enemies would not land on the ground - instead the enemies would just scroll back and forth across the screen once they reached that lowest level.

The product itself was not commercially released, and only 125 copies of Pepsi Invaders were made. As a result, it became one of the rarest Atari 2600 games in existence. In October of 2005 one of the game cartridges was auctioned off on eBay, and the winning bid was $1,825. The game's ROM eventually made its way out into circulation.
