Microsoft Ships Record 8.2m X360's in Dec Q, EDD Profits $528m
by Seb Parker, posted on 19 January 2012 / 4,181 ViewsMicrosoft have released their earnings release for FYQ2 2012, the all important holiday quater.
X360 shipments reached 8.2m, a record Q for the now 6 year old machine, up 1.9m units over the same quater last year. Providing we don't see substantial drops over the next 2 quaters, this should be the X360's best fiscal year overall. Total install base now stands at 65.8m. For the Calendar year, the X360 shipped just under 15m units.
Microsoft also reiterated Kinect has shipped over 18m units, and Xbox live is at 40 million active accounts (Gold and Silver). Kinect had reached 10.4m units through March 2011 according to Microsoft, and 8m at the end of 2010, so the device declined at least a bit compared to Q4 2010.
Microsoft don't comment on software figures, but did note that the US software attach ratio went up from 8.9 to 9.1.
The EDD division which houses the Xbox 360 along other entertainment ventures such as Windows phone and Zune, made a profit of $528m, which is down from the $679m they made this Q last year. Revenue is up 15% over last year to $4.24b. So far for FY 2012 the EDD has made $880m profit and $6.203b revenue. Well on track for another year of profit over the $1b mark.
As of this Q by my calculations, the EDD has profited over $3.5b since FY 2008 when they started profiting on the X360, it's likely at this point that total X360 content has now made Microsoft a small profit, offsetting the early (rather large) losses and the RROD payout.
Overall Microsoft saw record revenue this quater, with $20.9b, and profit of $6.62b.

Great for Microsoft. Insane how 6 years later a console can make so much profits.
Why would anyone have serveral active Gold accounts? Silver I grant you but Gold?

I was serious. I know lots of guys who use several gold accounts. It seems people assumed I was talking about way more users than I did though.

Damn shame that MS doesn't provide SW shipment numbers. Would be easier to compare it to other platforms.
40m XBox Live members means that only 61 % of XBox 360 consoles are connected to Internet (I don't think there's people connecting their console and not subscribing, as it would be useless, right ?) ! I think this is the same ratio since 2006, it has not changed.

"Total install base now stands at 65.8m. For the Calendar year, the X360 shipped just under 15m units." : So, 65.8m is sold to consumers and 15m is shipped to the shops, or both are shipped numbers ?

Looks like I was right on the money. I seem to recall I predicted 8.2m for the quarter :-D
On the Live number discussion : It seems weak effectively, I would have thought an HD console was meant to be played online, if not always online at least once in a while (online play, DLC (vade retro satanas), etc.). I thought my brother was an exception (he never played online at all and he plays games since 1987 ! To me that's weird, that's like having a Ferrari and using it only in town at 50 km/h max.
not really you have to remember not everybody has high speed internet capable of online play.

profit drop makes sense given the torrid discounting they were doing around Black Friday. I have a feeling that they are going to have to pay that check (lower sales) over the next couple quarters - that was in essence a WM-styled rollback which will have the effect of moving a lot of sales of second XBoxes earlier.

They already explained the profit drop, and your explanation wasn't it. Nice try.
