VGChartz Gap Charts, November 2011 Update - News

by Miles Taven , posted on 06 December 2011 / 7,526 Views

Welcome to the all new VGChartz Gap chartz. Due to the changes to the site this month (which I hope you're all enjoying), I've further refined the gap charts. X360 Vs. Wii Americas is now solely USA, and PS3 Vs. Wii EMEAA is now only Europe. Global PS3 Vs. X360 and X360 Vs. Wii UK remain the same as before. Next month I will be adding 3DS Vs. Vita charts.

Global:
Gap change in October: 574,781 - Xbox 360
Gap change over last 12 months: 627,689 - PlayStation 3
Total Lead: 3,057,671 - Xbox 360

For the first time this year the X360 managed to widen the Global gap between itself and the PS3, and by a hefty 575,000 units. Whilst Modern Warfare 3 bundles helped in early November, it was Black Friday in the USA that mainly contributed to the shift. X360 is expected to lead until the rest of the year, but by how much is anyone's guess. The gap could very well be north of 3.6 million after the holidays.

USA:
Gap change in October: 635,601 - Xbox 360
Gap change over last 12 months: 1,335,118 - Xbox 360
Total Lead: 6,590,126 - Wii

Outselling the Wii on Black Friday by 300k alone, along with Modern Warfare 3 bundles and Skyrim fever meant that, overall this month, the monthly change more than quadrupled compared to October. If Microsoft have learnt from last holiday there should be plenty of stock and no shortages occurring, meaning the X360 should handily take December as well. Though let's not forget the Wii is a monster in December in the USA. However, the gap should be below 6 million by the year's end given the current momentum the Xbox 360 has.

Europe:
Gap change in October: 204,779 - PlayStation 3
Gap change over last 12 months: 1,070,141 - PlayStation 3
Total Lead: 7,493,537 - Wii

Despite being a holiday month and momentum clearly being with the PS3 in Europe, its monthly gain was flat over October. However, with last week's sales we should see a much bigger lead in December (more than 300,000 is likely).

UK:
Gap change in October: 102,237 - Xbox 360
Gap change over last 12 months: 679,613 - Xbox 360
Total Lead: 1,116,480 - Wii

The holidays are now in full swing and the X360's monthly gains are growing. Unlike the rest of the charts, the X360 overtaking the Wii in the UK is now a foregone conclusion - it's simply a matter of when. The gap should be around 1 million units by the end of the year, with the X360 outselling the Wii for the year by around 700,000 units. Best case scenario sees the X360 overtaking the Wii by the end of 2012, worst case at this point looks to be the end of 2013.

Check back next month to see how the biggest month of the year affects the gap charts, and for the 3DS Vs. Vita chart debut.

I would love to see a 3DS versus DS gap chart launches aligned ! There is still a lot of gamers that think 3DS sales have been bad and tracking under DS sales, which is wrong.

Those were excellent gap charts. It's been a long while since the charts were this interesting.

Why do you keep saying october? November just ended with Black Friday. Anyway I don't share your optimism about 360, it's prices are back up, so I expect sales to be on par with PS3, and not much better.

great. 360 numbers should come down and PS360 will have an impressive battle but PS3 will likely still come out on top with the gap globle likely being 2.7 to 3.2m. and the gap for 2012 yr. yr. end likely 700k-1.2m.

hey it could go either way, and it could be worse.

Wait, the gap is 3.1 million now. Do you think PS3 could actually outsell the 360 in this peak holiday season? I agree there will be an interesting battle, but I still think 360 will crawl some sales. Maybe 250k more to make the annual difference a mere 500k in favor of PS3.

So if the pattern continues it will take quite a few more years for the ps3 to pass the 360. But then again these graphs show patterns never continue indefinitely. If something like May 2009-May 2010 happening the ps3 will be ahead by next year or something like August 2008-November 2008 would ensure the 360 beats the ps3 this gen.

Sure, will do a global one and Japan one, if it looks like Global really will favour 3DS by next year, I'll ditch it and stick with just Japan, were Vita stands the most chance.

The Vita won't do well since the games are said to be $60, $120 for Memory Card and some ps3 ports and exclusive vita titles that won't sell more than 7 million or 6 million Life Total. Although we will see.

Cherrypick much, I've seen the ceiling for retail games at $50, and many below that/ The $120 MC is the highest you can get also.

Fully agree, there will still be a 2 million gap at least in favor of the Xbox 360 on Jan 1st 2012 (imho)
