Xbox 360 Tops 60 Million Units Worldwide - News

by Miles Taven , posted on 02 December 2011 / 14,207 Views

With the data being processed for the week ending November 26th, VGChartz can confirm that the Xbox 360 has surpassed the 60 million unit milestone, in just over 6 years on shelves (averaging 10 million per year). Microsoft announced earlier this week that they had shifted over 960,000 units during Black Friday week, which means lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 in the US (30.86m) have now surpassed that of the PlayStation (30.1m), and it becomes the 3rd best-selling home console in the country, behind the Sony PlayStation 2 (46.1m) and the Nintendo Wii (37.45m).

Over 50% of all Xbox 360s are sold in the US (30.85M), meaning at least 1 in 4 homes house an Xbox in its homeland. The UK population, however, can claim they're the most passionate about the Xbox 360, as 11.2% of the population has bought one, compared to 9.9% in the US.

If the Xbox 360 remains flat year over year over the next 5 weeks, it should just about overtake its current peak year (2010) meaning the console's new peak year is its 6th. With that said, VGChartz anticipate higher sales this holiday season for the Xbox, and so it should clear this mark fairly easily.

MS deserves it for such a great gaming generation. It may have a had a rocky start, but the 360 is going to go down in history as one of the greats.

The Xbox 360 has no chance of surpassing the Wii world wide thanks to abysmal sales in Japan, but I do see a very slim chance that it could overtake the Wii in the USA depending on how hard Wii sales plummet after the release of the Wii U and how much Microsoft can maintain the great momentum it has had.

360 is gonna need 7 million people to do that

almost as much sales as NES ones. I couldn't say which of 360 or PS3 would reach NES first, but it now seems that the 360 will win, won't it ?

What was the NES installed base in the US ? I know it was 34M in the Americas, but in the US ?

Michael-5 Kai Master (on 02 December 2011)

Since USA takes 87% of the Americas share, I would assume 30 million or so? 360 looks to have surpassed that already.

Wait you thought PS3 could reach NES sales before 360? lol

Last numbers indicate just under 30 million 6 years after launch.

i figured i'd go ahead and mention that if you still think PS3 will reach 70m before 360 then you've lost your mind.

Well, at this rate I have no doubt that 360 will pass Wii U.S. sales by 2012 yr. end, but PS2'S. not likely. And likely not ever. Now on to my extended prediction For 2011. Nice graph's Parker.

It's more then likely at this point the 360 will add another 3 to 4m units through Dec. for a yr. end total of 63-64m units sold ww. Going out on a limb PS3 will add 3-4m also through Dec. for a total of 60-61m units ww meaning PS3 will likely have still won but by numbers to little to count.

I could give 2 shits about who disagrees.

Uh .. you think 360 can't overtake PS2 in the U.S, but it can the Wii ..... The Wii is gonna overtake the PS2 in the U.S. and judging by how the 360 is doing, it looks like it will also.

Very nice graphs! I like how that donut chart makes very good use of the X360 and Kinect color scheme.

I wonder if MS will try harder for Japan next gen or if they won't even bother trying anymore.

They should bother Europe much more! Not just Usa and UK... In Finland we have only 30% of all services from Xbox live and we pay the same price for gold. Not to mention many new additions doesn't ever come to Finland. (like Finnish kinect language, which was promised to come earlier this year.) But congratulations Microsoft!

Congrat... I can see 80mil life time.... especially since they still have lots to cut!

Good sales numbers for a 6 year console and this is before the biggest sales month of the year. MS' 360 will probably be up around 63 to 64 million by end of 2012. Not bad. It will be interesting if the 360 can keep its 10 million a year average in 2012.

10 year life plan for the 360. the next xbox to be released on the 360s 8th anniversary in 2 years time. the 360 may sell 5 million more units in total in years 9 (3 million) and year 10 (2 million), 360 may end up with 80 million lid sales.

This is it's peak year and one of it's worsed year (exklusive games wise) Kinect really helped ALOT.

JPL78 kivi95 (on 04 December 2011)

I agree, and I don't feel Microsoft catered at all to the gamers that adopted the system early on, instead pushing Kinect. But it sold a lot of systems and that lends to the stability of the platform so I'm not so mad about it. From a third party point of view I think this was one of the strongest years for the system so far.

Expecting a 8 year life cycle for the 360.

  • 0

Longer than that! Looks like the successor won't be out until its 8th birthday.

If MS keeps the 360 price the way it way on Black Friday, it will defiantly have a peak year. If prices go back up to $199, and $299 then I doubt it..

Still pretty insane, competition from PS3 and a lot of great multi platform titles have really helped keep 360 chugging along.

  • 0
tripenfall (on 06 December 2011)

do these figures allow for the multiple xbox's people have had to buy due to red ring of death and other system failures?

  • -2
flint (on 02 December 2011)

360 sales will drop off considerably now that black Friday has been and gone, Microsoft will still be lucky to overtake PS3 in 2011

sales don't mean anything, MS won last gen and this gen already. what matters is the greats, the great games in particular.
last gen it was halo, fable, kotor and star wars battlefront 1 and 2.

this gen its rainbow 6 vegas, gears, COD, battlefield, fallout 3 and elder scrolls... this gen is weird, because multiplatform games ended up being much better on the 360.

No, what they predicted was that the Playstation 3 would crush the 360 and that it would surpass 360 sales in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and now 2012.
