Microsoft Sells 800,000 X360s on Nov 25, 960,000 for BF Week - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 29 November 2011 / 8,870 Views

More Black Friday data is coming in for the USA market. According to Microsoft, the X360 sold 960,000 units during Black Friday week (likely November 20-26), with 800,000 of those systems selling during Black Friday itself (November 25). The company also sold 750,000 Kinects (standalone and bundled) during Black Friday week. This was the best week in the history of Xbox and X360 for Microsoft, and the 800,000 X360s sold on Black Friday 2011 are comparable to pre-Kinect figures for X360 in all of November 2007, November 2008 and November 2009.

Microsoft's 960,000 X360s in one week was actually within 40,000 units (DS in 2009) of being the highest Black Friday week of all time in the US.

These are obviously excellent figures - Nintendo just announced selling 500,000 Wiis on Black Friday itself, and Microsoft "only" sold 1.37m X360s in all of November 2010. With 960,000 X360s sold Black Friday week in 2011, it is hard to imagine the figure coming in lower than that. VGChartz US data for the first three weeks of November, plus Microsoft's data for the last week of November 2011 would put the X360 at 1.60m in the US for the month, up 17% from last November.

In 2008, when Nintendo sold 2.04m Wiis in November, the company sold 800,000 Wiis for Black Friday week. The DS sold 900,000 - 1,000,000 units each Black Friday week in 2009-2010, and ended up at 1.5m in November 2010 and 1.7m in November 2009 (1m BF week in 2009, 900k BF week in 2010) in November those years. When the DS attained figures comparable to X360 in 2011, there were several excellent hardware discounts and promotions concentrating total November sales very heavily in the one week. X360 in 2011 also had huge deals for Black Friday in 2011 - selling for $150 for the first time new as an example - but it remains to be seen if total figures will be as concentrated on the one week as the DS figures were in 2009-2010, or whether Black Friday accounted for less than half of November like Wii in 2008.

Wow, excellent sales for the 360, but with 4GB Arcade models selling for $150 at almost ever retailers, Kinect + 4GB models selling for $200 in most retailers, and the 250GB model also at $200 with Halo and Fable, I'm not surprised.

Still awesome sales, 100k more then last year, finally the 360 pulls sales higher YoY (Other then Gears 3 week).

Surprised PS3 didn't do as well though (other article says it sold 325k on Black Friday week). Maybe it's because the PS3 price cut was earlier, and MS saved it for Black Friday.

Black Friday definitely is getting crazy. X360 (800k) and Wii (500k) both just sold double their entire October totals (393k and 250k) in a single day in November. Would be interesting to see Sony's figures to see their BF: Oct ratio but we're unlikely to get anything.

The 360 is now THEE console of choice in NA... and just imagine what there sales are gonna be next year when Halo 4, GTAV, and the next COD all come out within a few months of each other, plus a likely $50 price drop across the board for all console bundles!

i was reluctant to comment on this but here goes. so 960k for the wk. well that is impressive, but i could only assume sony did 500k-700k for the wk which would further close the 1.5m unit gap 900k or 1.2m. MS 360 (or if its 400k then the gap would be 800k) could win 2011 if they can post more numbers like these but the fiscal yr. is up for grabs.if Seece was right about vgc likely estimating 360 selling 200k more then PS3 for the next 5 wk's then thats 1m units sold to consumers for 2011 giving MS 2011.

Since VgChartz has the 360 at 600k in their Black Friday preview, and its actually 960k, can we assume the PS3 is also heavily undertracked? VgChartz has PS3 at 320k so I'm assuming its actually about 650k.

No this is a good point. PS3 selling 325k when 360 sells 960k is insane! PS3 did 770k last year, and this fall it's been holding sales on par or just slightly down for most of the year. Too much of a difference if you ask me.

Around 400k in U.S for PS3, why are people coming out with ludicrus numbers for the PS3?

  • -1
kopstudent89 VGKing (on 29 November 2011)

Last year PS3 did 320k for BF week and 770k for the whole of November... Please use correct figures!!!
And Sony's PR didn't release numbers, so they seem to be low actually

That's Americas Kop .... PS3 did 530k in U.S for whole of November.

The bundles are the reasons for the xbox's impressive sales. The fact that the PS3's bundles weren't so attractive a PS3 160 GB with no game for or at best with two of their games for $199 versus the 360's 4G with no game for $150 or the 360 250GB harddrive with two of their best games or the 4G and Kinect for $199 doesn't exactly set up a fair fight and no doubt Microsoft came up with a bit of a loss financially in order to get those lofty sales figures.

If the PS3 had had a nubdle with Uncharted III and Modern Warfare 3 and a 250GB harddrive for $199, they would have fared much better as well.

The thing about bundles is that Microsoft can't keep selling the 360 4GB for $150.00 (or maybe they can, but it wouldn't have as great and effect on their sales as the other two and who really wants a 4GB xbox anyway?) or the 4GB model + Kinect for $199 or the 250GB model + Reach and Fable III (one thing that will really benefit is the look of FIII's overall sales figures) for $199 every day and it will probably be some time into the future before you see that again.

To say that's going to make them appear somehow dominant is a bit of a stretch and they probably won't top PS3 for the year without the continuation of those bundles which aren't going to be continued unless MS does something drastic just to be able to say they topped PS3 this year.

Note: Many of these sales were said to have occurred at Best Buy which was running the two games and massive harddrive + the 4g and Kinect for $199 deals.

They did dominate them though, and without an official $50 price cut ON TOP of discounts.

wrong! the PS3 was at $199 with Little Big Planet 2 and Ratchet and (whatever the game is called) for black friday!

otoniel EdHieron (on 01 December 2011)

my point is that those 2 PS3 gamers are great "popular" games
believe it or not 360 dominates NA

oop's looks like i miss read those numbers and miss took 360 numbers for ww. now i think we all know 1m (1.1m likely) is what was sold ww during black friday for 360 putting PS3's often argued 2011 victory over 360 in danger. will sony lose this highly contested war, or will FFIIIX-2 boost PS3 hardware and hold off 360 with PS3 continue it's yearly winning ways ways over the 360?

with Sony not releasing its BF numbers it puts how many units they sold in doubt.
