Black Friday Preview - News

by Miles Taven , posted on 28 November 2011 / 8,817 Views

That's it! The shelves stacked to the brim with amazing deals have been depleted, the busiest shopping weekend of the year in the U.S has drawn to a close and we're now officially into the holidays. The only logical next step (besides playing all those amazing games) is to tally up the big winners of the week.

Nintendo have done some of the legwork for us, as they announced today that the Wii broke its previous record of Wii sales on Black Friday itself, topping 500,000 units. Sales for the week are expected to top 650,000 units. Helped along with Walmart's very tempting $99 blue Wii offer, and the launch of the hotly anticipated Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (which also topped 500,000+). They failed to reveal 3DS numbers but did tell us how much it was up over previous weeks, from this we can estimate that the 3DS did around 450,000 units. 3DS buyers also expressed their interest in the new Mario game on offer this week, Super Mario 3D Land, which also sold over 500,000 units.

Microsoft have not revealed any numbers so far, but our estimates put them at a solid 600,000+ units for the week.

Lastly, Sony didn't reveal any numbers or statistics, but did mention that this weekend saw strong demand for the PlayStation 3, fueled most likely by the $199 holiday bundle on offer at most retailers. The PS3 topped 325,000 units for the week.

Great wii numbers. I personally don't know anybody who has purchased one this holiday season. But I do know of about 6 people including myself who purchased Zelda :).

Firstly, depleated is wrong Seece! It's "depleted" :-P

In other news, it's kinda shocking that the Wii could beat the 360 on Black Friday Week, considering how the Year has gone so far.

Seece Carl (on 28 November 2011)

I knew I should have googled that word! Wii did a number on everything this week, it'll be interesting to see NPD. With these numbers and the last 3 weeks, it's hovering around the 1 million mark.

Amazing what a $99 console with a new colour can do.

i'm not surprised about the Wii at all. It makes the perfect holiday gift for families and is extremely affordable. I predict it will do similar numbers next black Friday even with the WiiU being released.

Last years BF US week was: 606k for X360, 538k for Wii and 311k for PS3. So every console will be up yoy.

  • +4
yo_john117 (on 29 November 2011)

I kind of figured the Wii would absolutely dominate.

kopstudent89 (on 29 November 2011)

Hopefully we get some numbers from Microsoft and Sony (though Sony would be less likely). And once again wow @ Wii numbers, it's such a beast in America. I think it just increased its sales for the year in the US by 20% from just this one day!

  • +2
toadslayer72 (on 29 November 2011)

Woah, Seece's real name is Seb Parker? Is that short for Sebastian?

Anyway, can't wait to see who won BF out of the Wii and 360. With all of the hype though, I was thinking the numbers would be bigger. Maybe someone pushing a mil.

  • +2
TheSource (on 29 November 2011)

Wii was only $100 at Walmart. Wii + Zelda + JD3 + Zumba + spring cut + $100 on BF was always going to be pretty strong - been saying that since they cut to $150 in Spring and announced Zelda for Nov

  • +2
Seece TheSource (on 29 November 2011)

You're acting like Zelda is some HW pusher, it isn't, I doubt hardly any of the people pucharsing a blue $99 Wii were the type of consumer picking up Zelda. Given it only did 535k, that was more than likely the core Nintendo base which bought the Wii a loooong time ago.

  • +1
acdcste TheSource (on 29 November 2011)

I think Zelda might have had a small part to play. I agree its not a major hardware mover but its must have accounted for some extra buys.

I agree because my friend sold his wii a couple of years ago but is now thinking about buying one again because of the price and zelda

Spelling Error! "and the launch of the hotly anticipaited Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (which also topped 500,000+)."

On topic: Poor PS3 sales. Really disappointing compared to Wii and 360.

NightDragon83 (on 29 November 2011)

@acdcste... of course it's going to be a big seller when its on sale for only $99 during a worldwide economic recession. But despite the Wii's impressive performance during the holidays Nintendo has still been LOSING money for most of the year... go figure!

  • 0
Vueguy (on 29 November 2011)

this is America's Black Friday, if you expect PS3 to do better than Wii and X360 then you have never grow.
it's like Japan have a Black Friday and said, "hey hope X360 sell 400K in a single day and PS3 sell 200K".

i haven't bought a Wii, but nice estimate number. it's cheap during Black Friday, but i still don't feel like buying one when WiiU has been announce to come out soon, i think a Wii is useless if you already have a PS3 and X360 with better online games.
seriously, CoD suck on Wii. played it at my nephews house cause their dad was stupid and trade their PS3 for a Wii with one his friend.

Interesting question for Nov will be if 3DS + DS is up again on DS last year as Oct was. My guess is 3DS is around 850k this month (75k-->115k--->320k-->340k, although anywhere from 600k-1.0m is possible) which would mean DS would have to do 650k. Wii range is probably 900k-1.3m for the month as Black Friday week has typically been less than half Wii sales for November (350k-->950k in 2007, 800k-->2040k in 2008, 550k-->1260k in 2009, 600k-->1270k in 2010) but Wii gets a little bit more concentrated each holiday, and especially this year with Zelda.

--OkeyDokey-- (on 29 November 2011)

I know, anecdotal evidence, but the general consensus seemed to be that 360's and PS3's were flying off shelves and no one was buying Wii's. Weird.

  • 0
acdcste --OkeyDokey-- (on 29 November 2011)

Anecdotal evidence clearly is not an accurate barometer of where the sales figures will end up. If they were the 360 and PS3 would have left the Wii in the shade.

Carl, it's a 100 dollar console. I'm not surprised. I was expecting 400,000+ for the PS3 though. Will have to see what shakes out with the 3DS in Japan I guess.

Should be interesting to see who wins America between xbox and wii. Looks like it will be cloes. I would have assumed nintendo would have announced they finally ended microsoft's year long dominance in America if they had won, but at the same time I would have thought microsoft would have announced they are the best selling console yet again if they won.

  • -1
D-Joe enrageorange (on 29 November 2011)

hard to say, because NPD is full November, btw even last year MS's BF PR just talked about Kinect sales,so guess we need to wait one more week(NPD)

  • -1
acdcste Salnax (on 29 November 2011)

Don't forget though that Nintendo is doomed. The 3ds is a flop and the Wii won't sell anymore...Oh thats right the 3ds will pass the 8 million mark and the Wii will be the highest selling home console over the xmas period.

  • +2
Munkeh111 (on 29 November 2011)

Dirt cheap Wii sells well, but not as well as the mighty Xbox! In all honestly, I don't know about the deals in detail as I am in the UK, but that is still poor for the PS3, it looks like it is going to win the rest of the year, but have the "good work" spoiled by the holidays

  • -7

"grossly underestimate", doubtful. I think the problem is that most "hardcore" gamers are FULLY aware of its capabilities and that's why they hate on it. Are there good games for gamers on the Wii? Yes, but they are so very FEW and so very very far between. Wii will always sell well because its a family friendly system. Nothing about the Wii intimidates people. Its fun for people of all ages and walks of life.
However, dont think for a second that the "hardcore" gamer is missing something. Because the best games out right now are literally not CAPABLE of being on the Wii.

  • +3
acdcste acdcste (on 30 November 2011)

It all depends on what your interpretation of a "best game" actually is, mario galaxy 1 and 2 knock games like call of duty/battlefield into another dimension as far as i'm concerned. There may not be as many top games for Wii, but there are still plenty of excellent games to choose from. Clearly comments made by people on this site indicate that they DO (yes caps are stupid but you seemed to like doing them) miss the point. Your case is a typical "not capable enough" argument, again showing the "hardcore" view that only powerful games can be good games. Graphics are not everything my friend, its all about the gameplay and thats where Nintendo excell.

  • -2
GamesBond acdcste (on 30 November 2011)

You make a good point. Just one good point. Graphics arent everything. I agree to that.

When I say "capable" I mean that a lot of games can simply not exist on the Wii due to hardware restrictions. That's not an opinion. You cant have Mass effect, or Uncharted, or Gears, or Skyrim on the Wii. What is an opinion is "best games", Mario galaxy is fantastic I'll give you that. However, outside of Mario Galaxy can you even name one game for the Wii that has won game of the year for any major gaming site? From 2011 to 2007(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_the_Year#GamePro) I found not a one. (except Mario Galaxy), in fact I dont even recall any Wii games that were even in the conversation. Obviously those are still opinions but those opinions are the critics of the industry we love.

Look, I get that you love your Wii. I get that you're upset that traditional gamers may think it's weak sauce. (I say traditional gamers because I'm under the assumption that "hardcore" just means traditional or old school) The Wii is a vastly different gaming experience, and as such, it as gained followers unlike anything before it. But it has also separated itself from the traditional style games and their gamers.

Gameplay is important. While I would argue that some of the worst games with the worst gameplay call Wii their home. I understand thats on the developers. In earnest its about the Quality and Quantity of great games. And Nintendo hasnt produced consistent top level games for a long time now (for the traditional gamer). I got my first gaming blister on the NES. So they'll always be special to me, But the Wii is not geared for me or the majority of us Old-school gamers.

  • +1
GamesBond acdcste (on 30 November 2011)

I had this great reply for you. It was witty and intelligent and logical... and didnt post. I'm too upset to try retype the whole thing so here are the lame highlights.
-i agree graphics arent everything blah blah blah
-Mario Galaxy is good
-last 5 years no Wii games even in the conversation for game of the year according to top 26 gaming sites, blah blah blah other than mario galaxy.
-something about, Hardcore gamers are really traditional gamers...yada yada yada
-something about hardware literally not capable of Skyrim and Uncharted and other stuff.
-Nintendo does a lot of things great but it has distanced itself from the majority of traditional gamers.

  • gameplay is good except some of the worst gameplay of this generation is on Wii. (albeit not 1st party titles),
-closing agruement was something about its really all about the games for system and Nintendo hasnt produced top level games for traditional gamers in a very long time.
  • I think I had a comment about getting my first gaming blister on the NES.

Anyway (sigh) this is depressing. Just know your argument was soundly defeated. ;)

  • +2
acdcste acdcste (on 01 December 2011)

Not sure how you "soundly" defeated my argument but if thats what you believe then so be it. Glad you agree that graphics are not everything, like I said the first time around its all about the gameplay. Correction, Mario Galaxy is world class, not just good, and Mario Galaxy 2 is better than that. Nintendo might have distanced itself from traditional gamers, but selling 90 million Wii's and 149 milliom DS's must be terrible for them.

The fact you seem to think the Wii doesn't have top level games is your problem, there are plently, just to name a few here goes: Galaxy 1 and 2, Zelda twilight and skyward, Resi 4, No more Heroes 1,2, Smash Bros, Xenoblade, Metroid Prime, Okami, Fatal Frame, Pikmin 2, Monster Hunter Tri, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Epic Micke, Kirby x2, and the list goes on.

Your assumption that I love the Wii is strange however. I own a Wii, a PS3 and a 360. I just get tired of hearing drivel.
