Following Tales of Xillia last week, Square-Enix's delivered another big hit to the Japanese market in the form of Dragon Quest Collection for Wii. The title is essentially a repackaging of older Dragon Quest games for Wii on one disc - nonetheless the game rather easily was the largest software debut for Wii in Japan in 2011. Tales of Xillia, which had one of the best launches ever for a PS3 game in Japan last week dropped extremely quickly, as has been the case with other major PS3 RPGs like Final Fantasy XIII (1.5m to 200k in week one to two).

In addition to the games above, Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Taiko no Tatsujin Portable DX (PSP), Black * Rock Shooter (PSP), Nintendogs + Cats (3DS), and Sengoku Musou 3 Empires (PS3) will likely chart in the final top twenty data as well.
Dragon Quest Collection is the first Wii game to top 200,000 units in its opening week during 2011 in Japan. As a result, hardware likely had a nice lift as the mid-summer Wii games such as Goldeneye, Inazuma Eleven, and Rhythm Heaven, which each had much smaller openings than Dragon Quest Collection still effectively pushed Wii from selling 6,000-7,000 units per week in May and June to 10,000 - 20,000 units per week over July - August. At a minimum Wii sales should be back to 15,000 units this week, and given the recent steadiness of semi-big releases the lift could be to 20,000 - 30,000 units fairly easily.
In contrast, most of the PS3 lift last week was tied to the Tales + PS3 bundle which is gone this week. With the bundle gone and Xillia dropping very quickly, PS3 likely fell back to 25,000 - 35,000 units for the week. Next week will probably see PS3 sales steady or rising again though rather than dropping as Dark Souls has 115,000 preorders and is trending to open at 200,000 units or so, plus or minus 10% next week. Like Tales of Xillia though, Dark Souls is an RPG, and it should drop very quickly after a strong week one.
After Dark Souls, October looks pretty quiet, with nothing too big besides another AKB game for PSP, Kirby for Wii, and Ace Combat for PS3. The entire month will probably not see a single title as big as Dragon Quest Collection or Tales of Xillia. November in contrast is pretty stacked, as is December particularly with Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Vita confirmed for mid-month. So far hardware sales in Japan are running about 70,000 units behind the 2010 pace - if the 2011 pace can remain within ~500,000 units of the 2010 pace through mid-December hardware sales should end up being year over year as Vita will make up the difference. That said, pre-3DS hardware in Japan is down close to 1.9m units, which is a huge drop given only 5.35m systems had been sold through this point in 2010. The timing of 3DS and Vita definitely makes sense for reviving the Japanese market. To put it another way, 'next gen hardware' is already over 1/3 of the Japanese hardware market to date even before Vita launches.

Aww man tales dropped liked hell. but still it will sell for a long time despite what people think tales games do sell nice over time. Also why buy so many copies of a lazy collection?
55k is way too low for a game which has something 84% sellthrough and shortages
