The Japan Preview: 9/11/11 Edition (Tales of Xillia > 450k) - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 11 September 2011 / 7,304 Views

One of the major games of September 2011 launched this week in Japan. Namco-Bandai's Tales of Xillia was the title - and its sales did not dissapoint. Week one figures came to 479,000 units, which makes sense given the final preorders reached just under 300,000 units on the eve of release. Since a PS3 + Tales bundle was available this week, PS3 hardware sales should also be up substantially. The 479,000 is meant to be Tales games bundled with PS3. Other than Tales, it was a fairly average week for software.

1) Tales of Xillia (PS3) - 479,000

2) Resident Evil: Revival Selection (PS3) - 98,000

3) Resistance 3 (PS3) - 20,000

4) Monster Hunter Portable 3 HD (PS3) - 19,000

6) Rhythm Heaven Wii (Wii) - 18,000

6) Super Sentai Battle: Ranger Cross (Wii) - 18,000

9) Grand Knights History (PSP) - 14,000

9) Pokemon Scramble (3DS) - 14,000

9) Mobile Suit Gundam: Shin Gihren no Yabou (PSP) - 14,000

10) Atsumete! Kirby (DS) - 11,000

11) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - 10,000

12) MonHun Nikki: Poka Poka Ailu Mura G (PSP) - 9,000

13) Sengoku Musou 3 Empires (PS3) - 8,000

15) Call of Duty: Black Ops (PS3) - 7,000

15) Black * Rock Shooter: The Game (PSP) - 7,000

In addition to the games above Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Devil Survivor: Overclock (3DS), Toriko: Gourmet Survival (PSP), Inazuma Eleven Strikers (Wii), and Shin Sangoku Musou 6 Special (PSP) should chart in the final top twenty data for the week.

Capcom's latest foray into milking Resident Evil joined Tales in performing rather well this week - the company essentially brought older titles in the series to PS3 with better graphics and sold 100,000 copies anyway. The drop off from positions 1-2-3 is quite indicative of seasonality though - we are entering the least active period at retail Japan which is why the game ranked in first beat the game in third by a factor of 24:1. A more typical week would see three - five games above 30,000-40,000 units but a lesser title at the top.

Next week should be quite strong as well. Square-Enix releases Dragon Quest Collection for Wii, a compilation of older Dragon Quest titles. With 125,000 preorders currently, Dragon Quest Collection should end up around 140,000 preorders in total, setting up an opening week of 180,000 - 250,000 units. That would be the biggest opening for a Wii game to date in 2011, and should accompany a substantial bump. Dark Souls, which now looks like it could open at 150,000 units or more follows the week after Dragon Quest Collection.

By this time next week, much more information should be known about the Japanese holiday season, as all the information from the Tokyo Game Show, Sony's Vita event, and Nintendo's 3DS event will be available for analysis.

imagine that, they release a tales game first on the PS3 before anything else, and it sells incredibly well... too bad they didn't figure this crap out 4 freaking years ago. Releasing tales games on the xbox, complete morons.

I think it was Microsoft's wallet making the decision, not Namco.

Tales series is alive and well. But, this should be a lesson for Namco and other jRPG devs on the choice of console to release the games on.

Second best FW for a Tales game (behind Tales of Destiny 2). Don't you have anything for PS3 hardware? And Resident Evil is impressive O.o Resistance 3 disappoints but that will be the case worldwide not only in Japan. The DQ Collection is also somewhat impressive. It's a simple, plain and lazy port after all. Dark Souls will be interesting to see.

Very nice sales for japan maybe sony will be over 200,000 worldwide this week and beat back the 3ds temporary ascension to the top of the hardware chartz.

@reviniente 479k With bundles mean they include normal game only and also game + console sales. i think bundle sales are not more than 10k. Just a wild guess

I like how a PS3 game is derided for being a remake, but the Wii DQ game isn't.

'The 479,000 is meant to be Tales games bundled with PS3.' I don't get it. Does this mean SON¥ actually moved 479,000 additional consoles this week, or that the 479,000 games sold includes the games that were sold WITH the bundles?!

You mean top4, the PSP can't handle HD. We know it but VGchartz is having trouble with it. ;)

Well I assumed VGC's numbers were accurate. That puts Xillia second for FW.
