Sony Ships 1.8m PS3s, Loses $191m in the June 2011 Quarter - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 28 July 2011 / 6,774 Views

Sony's results for the June 2011 quarter have arrived. The company generated revenues of 1.49T Yen ($18.456b) for the quarter, but lost 15.5b Yen ($191m) in the same time frame. In the previous June quarter, Sony had revenues of 1.66T Yen ($20.56b) and a profit of 25.7b Yen ($317m) at current exchange rates. Sony now expects fiscal year revenue to reach 7.2T Yen ($93b) instead of the previously forecast 7.4T Yen ($96b), based on the first quarter, while the profit forecast was lowered to 60b Yen ($778m) from 80b Yen ($1.04b). Among other negative headwinds, Sony has been hit by hacking, the Japanese Earthquake, and the continuining weakness of the dollar against the Yen.

Due to Sony's new restructuring for the current fiscal year, there are no clear numbers on profit and revenue for its video game division. Previously these figures were included with the Networked Products segment of Sony, but PS3 and Sony's other gaming devices are now lumped in with all consumer electronics - not just 'networked devices'. Figures may yet come out - and this article will be updated if they do, but the materials released so far do not have the data.

For the quarter, Sony shipped 1.8m PS3s, 1.8m PSPs, and 1.4m PS2s. Those figures are down from 2.4m, and 1.6m for PS3 and PS2, but the 1.8m figure for PSP represents a 600,000 unit increase, so Sony shipped only 200,000 fewer systems in the June 2011 quarter than in the June 2010 quarter. Sony has maintained its previous forecasts for the fiscal year - 15m for PS3, 6m for PSP, and 4m for PS2. No hardware forecast for Vita was given which suggests Sony still isn't quite sure how many it can make.

It is also interesting to point out that from July 2010 to June 2011, Sony has shipped 13.7m PS3s (the exact same figure as X360 in the past year)- so the 15m forecast clearly implies a price cut soon. The 13.7m is also down 1m units from the 14.6m PS3s Sony shipped in the year to September 2010.

Sony has also shipped 8.6m PSPs in the past 12 months, so the 8m forecast implies PSP will decline quickly once Vita releases.

Global lifetime to date figures for PS3 stand at 51.8m, with PSP at 71.3m, and PS2 at 152.3m units with the latest numbers.

Software shipments for Sony platforms for the quarter reached 26.1m for PS3, 6.6m for PSP, and 1.5m for PS2 for a grand total of 34.1m units. In the previous June quarter, software shipments were 24.8m PS3 games, 9.2m PSP games, and 3.4m PS2 games, or 37.4m in total. During the March 2011 year, software shipments for Sony's platforms reached 210m, and Sony expects software shipments to reach "about that level" again in the current fiscal year, although it is somewhat unclear if they are including Vita software in that forecast.

Lifetime to date software shipments for PS2 games stand at 1530.7m, while PS3 stands at 464.5m. PSP software shipments are now over 300m units - at 304.2m units to date.

Thus shipment attach rates are now 10.05 games per PS2, 8.97 games per PS3, and 4.27 games per PSP. The PS3 attach rate should drop some with the coming price cut, but within six to nine months the average PS3 owner will have bought 9+ games.

Wonder how much of a pricecut the ps3 will get?

MARCUSDJACKSON yo_john117 (on 28 July 2011)

i hope a price cut to $249.99 so they can have flexibility and continue to either cut price leading up to the launch of PS4 or cut price to $199.99 and see a sales spike and not need to cut price again until sales slowdown again. here's how i see pricing strategies. (2011 $249.99) (2012 $199.99) (2013 $179.99) (2014 $149.99) meaning PS3's fly off shelves every yr. the less flexible approach would be. (2011 $199.99) (2013 $179.99) (2014 $149.00) meaning sales are steady leading up to the launch of PS4 or they could fly off shelves. i say the lowest price PS3 would have to be in order to not have a competing price with PS4 would be $179.99 which seems more likely but the other 2 gives Sony more room to muscle the release to of PS4.

I am guessing we will see $199 PS3, that price will compete with XBOX 360 base model in US much better than $249 because Microsoft is not going to drop XBOX 360 to $99 but rather $149, and reason for that is $99 price would erode all the profit they make on XBOX 360 base model.

PS3 hardware seems accurate with 500K on the shelves but 60M software on the shelves doesn't.

you know there is a great website for seeing how many were sold. Not as accurate as these shipped figures obviously but still very good none the less

PS2 long live the king. looks like a slight 200,000 unit adjustment is needed VGC for PS3! PS3 is doing better every yr. PS3 may continue a trend of 15m sold for the next 3 yr's when you'd expect a downward trend to happen. PSP could pass Wii if discontinued? i'd like to see PS2 reach 200m sold as it only has 48m to go but considering PS2 would have to be on the market for another 12 yr's and it would have to continue selling 4m each yr. i doubt that would happen. i expect software sales to continue picking up. with me not knowing how much PS3 cost to manufacture i can't say if profit will be made or not if and when a price cut is made.

Through different articles and comments made by SONY in 2009 it cost SONY $240 to make a PS3, and they were selling it at $299 and $349. SONY started to manufacture new PS3 model 3-4 months ago using cheaper components and because of economies of scale they are probably closer to $140-$170 manufacturing cost for each unit now. Keep in mind PS3 will consume less electricity, it will have smaller chip inside and weight less we already know all this from FCC filing made few months back. All this lowers the costs. $199 PS3 I shall see you in AUGUST 2011.

@yum123 Yeah, Sony has always brought in more revenue than MS, unfortunately for them, MS has always been more profitable by an order of magnitude.

Sony employs many, many more people than MS does, and they've got their fingers in a lot more pies.

At some point the 'loss' of money by these companies needs to be put into context.

Considering the issues this quarter this would seem to be very good results. My only concern is Vita primarily due to poor 3DS sales and the probability this will translate to poor sales for the Vita handheld.

Still not convinced on the price cut for the PS3 but it worked out for them last time so what the heck.

"Loses $191m in the June 2011 Quarter"

It's funny to read that... because the company profited 27.5 billion yen... and the PS3 division profited 1.7 billion yen.

Why did they ship 1.8 million PS3's and PSP's. That makes no sense. Anways they should specify the word "loss" more clearly

  • -2
ethomaz dsage01 (on 28 July 2011)

Yeah... because Sony profited 27.5 billion yen ($353 million)... I can't understood this "loss".

It could also be down to the fact that they probably have no idea how the market will react to it. We've seen how wrong Nintendo got the handheld market this time around. They're usually the experts, and I'm sure Sony were also heavily basing their predictions on the size of the market from Nintendo's data.

I think we will know more after Gamescom and Tokyo shows. I already preordered 2 PS Vitas. I will have to order some good games too, I think Uncharted will nicely complement my new hardware.
