Killzone 3 Sells 500,000 Units Worldwide Week One

by Jacob Mazel, posted on 01 March 2011 / 15,358 Views

VGChartz can reveal that Sony's latest exclusive title, Killzone 3 has sold 500,000 units worldwide in its first week for the PS3. Sony sold half of the units in the Americas, and half in EMEAA.

Killzone 3 Bundle

Roughly 10% of the 500,000 units were bundled with PS3 hardware, so there should be a modest lift for PS3 hardware during the week. The previous Killzone game on PS3, Killzone 2 released in 2009 and sold 750,000 units week one for the PS3. Killzone 2 went on to sell 2.58m units worldwide, more than tripling its week one figures over the past two years - a figure that Killzone 3 could still hit with a strong long-term sales performance.

i guess 500,000 is average. Nothing special.

billie91 (on 04 March 2011)

Good sales for a game that's just one week in the stores.

RLAAMJR. (on 04 March 2011)

The game started selling good. I was under the impression that it won't sell well because the game lasts for only about 4 hours

Americant_heroxbox (on 03 March 2011)

wow good sales....

aznable (on 03 March 2011)

@pristine20 friday in uk only for both the games. friday in the us for the 2 and tuesday for the 3.

Larkani (on 03 March 2011)

the game came out on 25th in europe, so this is not the final for the firstweek

@tripleb2k. You're not being a Dick. You didn't like it that much. That's cool. There are plenty of games coming out this year on PS3. GT5, LBP2 and KZ3 already out with Infamous, Socom4, Resistance3, Uncharted3 and Twisted metal all due to drop this year. You're gonna need a body double just to get time to play all these games.

hiroko (on 03 March 2011)

wow that weird!!.

tripleb2k (on 03 March 2011)

Pretty good sales! I was hoping for more but PS3 exclusives aren't mega first week sellers. They have great sales overtime though (Uncharted series for example). Side note, am I the only one disappointed with this game? Not too be a dick but it wasn't that good.

Rawnchie14 (on 02 March 2011)

KZ2 was a benchmark game graphically - thus drove better sales. This is just more of the same.

yahoocom1984 (on 02 March 2011)

undertracked ur fucking arse, XeNoStRatoS

XeNoStRatoS (on 02 March 2011)

This one is undertracked for sure. You will see... There is still a whole day in Europe left for WW 1st week sales and what about Japan? My expectation is at least 850K if not barely more than 1M plus PS3 in hardware 1st place for the week with about 350 - 375K units sold.

MetalGamer (on 02 March 2011)

Such a great sequel deserved more, not less than Killzone 2. It reminds me MotorStorm. Pacific Rift was a great evolution but sales were even worse (and much worse) than the original game.

jacks81x (on 02 March 2011)

Not great sales, but 500K in one week is still better than most games. With good legs, this should hit 2 mil in lifetime sales.

Kai Master (on 02 March 2011)

weak sales, and i didn't like the online multiplayer experience.

viperlegendkiller (on 02 March 2011)

i wonder if resistance will sell more than this im seeing a trend of garbage sony exclusives here

Pristine20 (on 02 March 2011)

@azor maybe a lot of people that liked the previous one dislike this. There were free demos for both SP and MP yet people blame kz2 for the poor outing...wtf? A lot of people skipped kz2 cos of it's demo as well but it did better than this.

geddesmond2 (on 02 March 2011)

Eh if I'm not mistaken but this game wasn't longer on the market compared to KZ2. Both games still released on a tuesday in America and a Friday in Europe except Europe got it first on the friday with America getting it the following Tuesday. The first week in America for KZ2 sold for the same amount of time as the First week for KZ3 and the same for Europe.

Icey7 (on 02 March 2011)

I suspect review scores also were a factor here. KZ2 had a metacritic of 91 whilst KZ3 is at 85 plus some major review sites gave lower than expected scores. Hopefully it will be a slow burn and sell but based on these initial numbers I think it may struggle to beat KZ2.

aznable (on 02 March 2011)

more days on the market with a larger userbase and a 30% less copies sold; i think a lot of people that bought the "first" installment of the game disliked it

zuvuyeay (on 02 March 2011)

pretty much expected,10% hard ware and we can comment here now woot

SlaughterTheISA (on 02 March 2011)

It only came out on Friday in the U.K. But still this is so disappointing for such a great game.

mrpapaye (on 02 March 2011)

In most stores, like for instance, in mine, its already for sale for a week already. We had a better 1st week for this one than for "Killzone 2".

pacman7 (on 02 March 2011)

Its been out for only 4 days in europe since this article was written, should be over a million after a full week imo

AmericanAli (on 02 March 2011)

this is disapointing,i though the ps3-community is grown overe the last 2 years especially after the ps3 slim released...and now i see this..

scapegoatsqueal (on 02 March 2011)

Even more abysmal sales than its predecessor.

chapset (on 02 March 2011)

I hope the game didn't cost 60mil to produce

pbroy (on 02 March 2011)

@lilpert when you are drunk and have sex, do looks really matter? ~_n

late_release (on 02 March 2011)

Not my cup of tea, but it seems very low for its value and for its genre. And in my opinion the promotion was very poor compared to the previous releases...

Slimebeast (on 02 March 2011)

Not bad.

Kleeyook (on 02 March 2011)

This is what happened when the reviews were out a week before the games actually released. Poor Sony. Why didn't they review Reach a week or two before it launched and bashed its beta MP before it launched!? Dammit!

maverick40 (on 02 March 2011)

it's not even out a week in europe.............

maverick40 (on 02 March 2011)

haha Bullshot on this one. Troll harder.

Lilpert (on 02 March 2011)

Lol i own a 3d tv and the 3d mode has a horrible resolution and is ugly compared to gt5's 3d mode! but it is quite nice though!

pbroy (on 02 March 2011)

I'm so mad that lots of people didn't buy this game.. It's freaken 3D damn it!! Stop being cheap and go buy a 3D TV and this game so you can indulge with some orgasmic eye pleasures. I am so mad I'm going to masturbate when i get home... not once, but twice!!!!

maximus22 (on 02 March 2011)

Considering it's competing with Bulletstorm and Homefront it's not a bad first week at all.

donsterydo2 (on 02 March 2011)

Why still no "plus" sign ?

donsterydo2 (on 02 March 2011)

PS3 exclusive games will eat each others sales this year IMHO there will be many kick ass multiplatform games.

geddesmond2 (on 02 March 2011)

@apollian LMAO. Halo is the biggest game MS has, it released with no other games out and it released after the summer holidays when no games were being released. Just look at other exclusives for the 360 like Alan Wake and Crackdown. Then tell me PS3 games fail to sell.

Munkeh111 (on 02 March 2011)

Disappointing, I hope this would sell better, but given this was made much quicker than KZ 2, should probably still sell enough to turn a profit

mangoman10 (on 02 March 2011)

how much did bulletstorm sell?

Lilpert (on 02 March 2011)

I did not buy the game until now. I was really looking forward to an online-coop mode. After KZ2 was lacking an online-coop and every other "AAA" action game such as Gears of War 1 and 2 and the Halo Series has one I will not accept any excuse like "oh we wanted to create some sort of special coop bla bla bla". So he is saying that the offline-coop is nothing special? Or why was it impossible to give the option between an offline AND online coop? Well, i subscribed this petition to encourage GG to release a patch which fixes the online-coop issue (1500 subscribers already). http://www.petitiononline.com/kz3ocoop/petition.html

finalsquall (on 02 March 2011)

is it a week or was it the last few days of last week

darthdevidem01 (on 02 March 2011)

lol @ people blaming bulletstorm. Looking at PAL charts, bulletstorm itself might be a flop.

MonstaMack (on 02 March 2011)

Decent sales. I feel it will have better legs and sell just as well as KZ2 did.

Ping_ii (on 02 March 2011)

LOL halo big boy shooter cause it sold more? ROFLMAO!

untomaniac (on 02 March 2011)

I thought I was going to sell more shit sales

damndl0ser (on 02 March 2011)

I haven't played KZ3 yet but does it have the input lag that KZ2 does? I probably will not be picking this thing up any time soon but if it doesn't have the lag I may get it sooner than later. (bargain binned of course)....

NeoRatt (on 02 March 2011)

Can't say I am much of a Killzone fan, but I don't think it deserved this kind of sales. I personally thought KZ2 was lifeless, but I can't argue with the game's quality. PS3 fans should be supporting this game better.

yahoocom1984 (on 02 March 2011)

Less than I predicted

think-man (on 01 March 2011)

I think everyone should play this game! No other shooter can come close to the fun factor this game offers, Ill still be playing this when killzone 4 comes out.

TheWon (on 01 March 2011)

Wow! So the So called Halo killer Killzone 2 still out sold part 3! Despite how nice looking it is it will never be a big boy FPS!

binary solo (on 01 March 2011)

I doubt bulletstorm did much to dampen kz3. there just wasn't the samee hype as for kz2.

tjallern (on 01 March 2011)

KZ2 was much better IMO. My KZ3 opinion is only based on BETA and Demos, but the great feeling I loved about KZ2 was totally stripped away... I will probably not get this game, on the other hand KZ2 was the only thing on my mind when it released. I am very disappointed in the direction this game went. On the Valentines Day comment by pbroy: Too bad the world is not like Japan, where girls are giving presents to the boys on Valentines =P LOL. Gamers would be financially strong.

monsterone (on 01 March 2011)

i dont seem to care what the sales are. i have really been enjoying this game. i even like it better than killzone 2. the more i play this game the better it gets. plus i havent noticed any bugs or cheaters. like it much better than black ops.

Rafux (on 01 March 2011)

@pbroy Dude that was beautiful

pbroy (on 01 March 2011)

It was a tough week with lots of good games (Bulletstorm, Radiant Historia, de Blob 2, Knights Contract?!) This game should sell well, considering its being bundled from the get-go and it will sell great along with some kick ass 3D TV deals. Probably sell 3 million or so. Now the real reason the game failed to sell as much at launch..... Valentines Day! So many people are still trying to recover from that one night of wasted money trying to buy affection for that one person. Using a holiday to make things extra romantic to land a night of hot sex. A love that fades away the very next day, after getting what they accomplished to do, by using a Saint's day for their own selfish human pleasures... the world will end soon

Rafux (on 01 March 2011)

K3 will probably end up selling 2.5 to 3m and whats wrong with that? Not all FPS can sell like COD or Halo, if K3 sells 3m life time that would be awesome numbers.

Feniris (on 01 March 2011)

Well, if the reception to the beta hadn't been so polarizing...

scat398 (on 01 March 2011)

This is expected from an average shooter in a flooded game market. KZ2 had the benefit of hype to get it to it's sales figures but reality has set in on this franchise.

mantlepiecek (on 01 March 2011)

I am sure it will have good legs and it will outsell killzone 2 100%.

Smashed (on 01 March 2011)

@Apollian.. You're comparing Killzone to Halo? Please. Stop the trolling, it's making you look bad.

ElGranCabeza (on 01 March 2011)

That's pretty horrible. And the commercials have been all over the place. What I can say is I called it.

chocoloco (on 01 March 2011)

More than I expected based on the pre order numbers I can't wait until my copy is added to the total.

AdventWolf (on 01 March 2011)

Wow I expected more, I guess a lot of people didn't like killzone 2.

FattyDingDong (on 01 March 2011)

500k a week for a ps3 exclusive is good.

Rafux (on 01 March 2011)

@enrageorange really? Launching at the same time as BulletStorm and without the 4 years of hype that K2 had I don't think a lot of people were expenting something better than 500K, check the forums everybody was expenting below K2 launch week. BTW my only console is a PS3 and I have K2.

enrageorange (on 01 March 2011)

@rafux. In line with 360 fanboy expectations. Anyway you look at it poor sales. People thought it would improve from killzone 3 and sadly at least initially it was not able to. The hardware boost was pretty nice though imo.

ArkZero (on 01 March 2011)

@Apollian I dont think its because the ps3 exclusives arent good enough, its because they arent exactly more popular than the other consoles exclusives. It seems you just want to downplay the ps3 judging by your post history.

Rafux (on 01 March 2011)

In line with everyone expectations.

Apollian (on 01 March 2011)

thats poor, but its to be expected from the PS3.. what was Halo Reach, like 2.6 million in its launch day?.. thats the reason why Sony is in last place. its games aren't good enough to sell consoles.

Colocho (on 01 March 2011)

Colocho (on 01 March 2011)

Great game!... Great single player expirience (not sure why the critics bashed it) and an even better multiplayer.

viperlegendkiller (on 01 March 2011)

FAIL

justinian (on 01 March 2011)

It's now all about the legs. Anywhere near K2 sales would be a great result. Pity, the sales rarely reflect the greatness of the work done and this happens as well on all consoles IMO. Hype sells.

geddesmond2 (on 01 March 2011)

When KZ2 released there was hardly any games releasing for the PS3 around the same time. This year there is too many games so of course the sales will take a hit. These are great sales giving the circumstances and the time of year. Word of mouth will give this game legs. Everyone on my friends list who has the game are praising it in there comments and every day theres someone new with the game. This game is not a FAIL.

Baalzamon (on 01 March 2011)

@leatherhat: It's also probably a little lower because Bulletstorm...I'm sure the legs will be better than Killzone 2 though, lol.

axumblade (on 01 March 2011)

Should have some legs. I'd imagine some of the audience were torn between Bulletstorm and Killzone 3. I can see it eventually reaching (if not passing) Killzone 2...

9009pc (on 01 March 2011)

awe disappointing, it was serious improvement on killzone 2 and is right up there with uncharted 2 in being the best games I have ever played :(. hopefully have really strong legs.

ethomaz (on 01 March 2011)

Sad. Sad. Sad. The first game with audio and subtitles in pt-BR deverves more a lot more.

leatherhat (on 01 March 2011)

My estimate was spot on! Lower first week due to less hype, but hopefully will have better legs.

Boutros (on 01 March 2011)

It's too bad it didn't outsell Killzone 2 but I kind of see it having better legs considering there's a bundle this time and Move.

dsage01 (on 01 March 2011)

fail, fail, fail i expected 1 million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow and this is the biggest week 1 of the year

kurasakiichimaru (on 01 March 2011)

I don't really like shooters but I might pick this up if they sort of online co-op for move controllers vs. regular controllers.

NYANKS (on 01 March 2011)

Sad about the decline. Hopefully legs prove decent. Great game though.

Xbbjf9s (on 01 March 2011)

Aww wtf people...this game is a masterpiece.

Euphoria14 (on 01 March 2011)

I wonder if Move support will give it better legs.
