Xbox sales are very low, because jpn people just don't care about western game offerings, just like americans don't care about non-american movies (ofc there are niche fan groups).

Additionally japanese people like to do sth "for their contry", so they mostly prefer japanese products (things like Prada, iPhone and McDonalds are super popular over there though), so there is absolutely no racism involved.

@viperlegendkiller: Pirating only affects software sales, not console sales. You still need a console to play pirated games. So, hacked console means better console sales, not worse. For example, hacked PS3 means their console sales will probably go up and software sales down. And Japanese have never liked western games, bad 360 sales have nothing to do with pirating.

@Viperlegend, so much for your educated theory. First of all Japan is the country where least piracy takes place, possibly in the whole world. So i don't even know why you brought that up. Secondly if 90% of consoles where pirated in Asia; why did not 360 outsell PS3 every week over there then? PS3 always outsold it even though its more expensive and it was impirateble until a couple of months ago. Some development countries like Brazil (not Asia) and Hong Kong, piracy is huge, maybe close to 90% as you said. However, those countries usually don't even have official consoles, so they import from other countries like Japan or USA. Most of Asia, don't have a huge market for consoles and yes a bigger procent than here in the west are pirated, but far from all.

i have an 'educated theory' so bare with me all asian countries pirate video games like mofos and have modded consoles and whatnot and i know for a fact that like 90% of xboxs are all chipped pretty much in asia so now that ps3s finally hacked i believe their asian sales (japan etc) will go down big time like 50% it makes sense as to the ludicrous xbox360 sales gap compared to all other consoles in japan is like no other anywhere the japs are either mass pirates or racists in my opinion no country that big can all 'dislike' western games , u would think japs would be all over 'xbox live 'due to its vast superiority to psn and ninendos offering.

Oh Source, I think it was a good article. Some would just rather you come in here and be more of a cheerleader rather than an analyst of the report. You did a fair analysis of both the Ninty and MS numbers which both show positive and negative things. Keep up the good work.

Kowenicki if 8m Kinects in two months is an unsustainable pace and responsible for only a 5% increase at that unsustainable pace how is it not at least somewhat worrisome? If Kinect does 17m in 2011 but only 6m in Q4 2011 due to saturation do you expect X360 shipments to be 7m? Or do you think the decrease in what lifted X360 in 2011 will cause a slow erosion in 2011? Think about what X360 would have been without Kinect in Q4 2011 - probably 5m or so and that's with 8m Kinects. They're going to need to cut price again to do 6m again.

I didn't spin anything - Nintendo lowered its hardware forecast and raised its software forecast. That is a neutral revision, no reason to pretend its all bad when SW was raised 25m+ and hw only lowered 2.5m. I did the math - HW Revenue will be down almost $500m with the revision and SW up a bit over $500m. What do you want me to say Kowenicki? I noted Microsoft's figures are up, particularly for profit, and Nintendo's are down. On the other hand even with the record figure for Microsoft, 8m Kinects in two months which can't be sustained over the entirety of 2011, with Wii AND PS3 likely to be down in Q4 2011 Microsoft still likely only shipped 30% of current consoles for the quarter (6.3m + 8.7m + 6m est for PS3). It isn't crazy to be worried about X360 with Europe / EMEAA and Japan not reacting to Kinect like the USA is

oh forgot to ad the Slim version and kinect came out in what around 6 months of each other and it still hasnt slowed the gap between PS3 and Xbox

what are you on about..the PS3 is still only 4mil behind the 360 in world wide sales..and thats after MS have released a so called failed slim version (that might i remind you is everything the orginal PS3 was..gloss black..soft touch button..built in hardrive..wifi QUITE!!) and Kinect which is a failure in itself..the ONLY place buying the Xbox in ANY great deal is America and we all know yanks are as dumb and stupid as the stuff they produce anyway..the PS3 wont ever be number 1..the Wii has deffinatly got that this generation but it sure as hell can get number 2 and i can almost garentee that the moment Sony overtakes Microsoft will release there Next gen Console just to pull the same crap they pulled this generation..any console can get a massive lead by releasing a console a year early..

Good job to Microsoft... have to admit it makes me laugh everytime i see those threads "The PS3 can still be #1 ..." .. when it would be virtually impossible for it to be #2 now .. Ive heard Sony is maybe trying to release its new console before M$ this time hoping it turn the tide.. I suspect this gen will be over in 2 yrs .. Meaning not much will change in two years.. Kinect will probably bolster 360 sales enough to keep it #2 .. and No ones catching up with the Wii...

Those are some STUNNING numbers, especially given how M$ supposedly spent "$1 bln" to push Kinect and WP7...wow...just wow!

No one is being negative, but its the best quarter by only 5% with 8m Kinects shipped in two months. Given that Microsoft can't sell 48m Kinects in a year (8m in 2 months * 6) the reactions here seem pretty fair.

I'm in Albuquerque, and when I go to the local Walmart every 2-3 days to get food I see 10-15 standalone Kinect sensors, and 1-3 X360s bundled with Kinect. I personally haven't seen sellouts for any hardware this holiday except in the two days after Christmas and since then stock has been low for Wii / X360 but never depleted fully.

I dont know what the situation in the US is, but i work in a store in the UK and we have about 28 Kinect units and loads of 360 and NO Wiis or PS3s, only a few black Wiis. here in Europe and in Japan Kinect hasnt boosted 360 numbers much according to vgchartz and now these numbers. so the situation in the US is very different from the worldwide picture.

I live in the suburbs near New York. Over here its hard to find an xbox at retailers. Standalone Kinects are not in shortages but 360s are. This is similar to sony's shortages last year. I could find them easily in stores near me. That doesn't mean they were fake. Some areas will have them and others won't.
Anyway seems like vgc overtracked by a bit. Nice numbers regardless.

As usual monster profits. Little dissapointing HW numbers for X360 though. With all this Kinect mania only 200k more than during 2008 holiday season. Nice profits for EDD. We don't know though how much X360 accounted of those as windows mobile 7 also launched during this holiday season. it sucks that MS and Sony don't have seperate video game division nowadays. =( Makes it harder to compare profit and revenue numbers.

Why would PS3 sales go down since it's hacked? If anything it would go up. I mean the Wii has been hacked for awhile, but it still has sold better than the PS3 and 360. The reason for such agap is Japan usually goes for companies that are already known to be of good quality, or new ones that appeal to them and can prove they provide the same good quality. MS screwed up any kind of impact they could have had in Japan with the early RROD fiasco. After that, many Japanese gamers have been wary of purchasing it in droves.

Why don't we wait for Sony's financial report before we see if the PS3 can or cannot pass the 360. Of course a lot can also change this year when Sony cuts the price of the PS3.

MS do deserve congrats for having a great year despite it being their 5th this gen. Kinect seems to have been huge this Christmas, though it does seem most were sold to existing customers. We'll have to see how well sales go this year, though, to see if it has staying power. Still, congrats MS.
