2011 Year on Year Sales and Market Share Update to January 15th - News

by Miles Taven , posted on 21 January 2011 / 5,307 Views

Here we see data representing the global sales through to consumers and change in sales performance of the three home consoles over comparable periods for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.  Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.

"Year to date" sales for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 sales are shown in series at the top of the table and then just below a comparison of 2011 versus 2009and 2011 versus 2010 is displayed.  This provides an easy-to-view summary of all the data.

Xbox 360 - YOY up this week 64k , up YTD 33.98%

360 continues to do well YoY despite shortages that are expected until the end of January at the earliest. Even with this handicap it's evident it's going to be its highest selling January month ever, 5 years on from release. Q1/Q2 should mimic this.

PS3 - YOY down this week 26k, down YTD -10.93%

YoY drops continue to slow down; the PS3 could settle at an average weekly rate of being down 10k YoY or even flat at this rate. However this time last year it stabalised in the 200k mark so it'll be interesting to see how things fold out this year.

Wii - YOY down this week 100k, down YTD -27.46%

Another hefty YoY drop, but again slowing down. On par with 2009 so far, so we could see it trend similarly throughout Q1.

@ninty_shareholder64:

Mario Sports Mix isn't going to sell Wii consoles. It's just going to sell to the already established Nintendo teet guzzlers. And Last Story will likely fare as well as every other hardcore title on the Wii--poorly.

Xbox360 and PS3 will completely dominate the Wii through 2011. Especially with Nintendo showcasing a portable system that is going to technically out-shine their home system. Kinect, Move, and 3DS mean no one is going to pay much more attention to the Wii. Well, that, and there's really nothing on the Wii for 2011 compared to the Xbox360, PS3, and 3DS. All the more reason that E3 or the TGS will see Nintendo talking about the next console.

@jkudlacz "Wii will probably drop below PS3 and XBOX 360 in next few weeks."
brave prediction!
But you obv have no idea what you're talking about, imho. Try to look at the SW releases to get a clue. Last Story and Mario Sport mix say hello!
I would bet against your prediction!

As a Kinect owner, i can tell you that Adventures is like Wii Play. It's great the 1st time and good the other times, just as long as you don't play it often. I also have Kinect Sports, Dance Central, and Kinectimals(i have 4 kids). I have the Wii and the PS3, but the Kinect is awesome. I do think that they need more games real quick. And hopefully something more challenging!!!!

Wow, the 360 is having a shortage of consoles and it still managed to marginally outsell the PS3. Impressive, I can't eait until February to see the 360 outsell the PS3 on a weekly basis. It would be nice to see the 360 ahead of the PS3 for the Annual Summary, as last year PS3 managed to stay on top the whole year.

As for Kinect, I think it's a gimmick, mainly because of a lack of games (Dance Central does legitimately look awesome), but wow it's selling. What are these Kinect owners getting as games though? Kinect Sports is only selling 1 copy for every 3 Kinects, and even if you total all the other Kinect games, it's still not enough to match the number of sensors. I guess Kinect Adventures is enough for most, or maybe they ran out of money at this point.

I'm interested to see the 2011 Kinect line-up, especially on a hardcore game front.

XBOX is not going to drop the price until Sony drops PS3 price. Microsoft is making a killing on each console. And Kinect has been a HUGE success for them.

I hope all the exclusives will help increase PS3 sales. I am wondering how will 3D technology and Move affect PS3 sales.

Wii will probably drop below PS3 and XBOX 360 in next few weeks.

Hmmm, with xbox having such a good year, makes me wonder if they are going to try and power through yet another year without a price drop...
