2010 Year on Year Sales and Market Share Update to September 11th - News

Here we see data representing the global sales through to consumers and change in sales performance of the three home consoles over comparable periods for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.  Also shown is the market share for each of the consoles over the same periods.

"Year to date" sales for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 sales are shown in series at the top of the table and then just below a comparison of 2010 versus 2008 and 2010 versus 2009 is displayed.  This provides an easy-to-view summary of all the data.

Wii - The bank holiday deals have dried up and so Wii has experienced the biggest week over week drop of the three consoles, down to its lowest ever weekly sales. Could this be an indication that Legacy deals have dried up already? The last time I said I expect Wii to fall below 135k Nintendo pulled something out of the bag. Come end of September they could very well have something else planned; if they don't however, sales are projected to fall below what they are now. Again, if we see no price cut, YOY losses will become more significant in about 3 weeks.

Wii:  DOWN year on year this week by 13k or -8% and DOWN year on year - year to date by -2.75%.

PS3 - Also saw a harsh dip. Whilst not falling to its lowest sales of the year, it's dangerously close. Can Move sustain sales until the holiday season? I'm doubtful, but at the least the YOY drops will become less sharp over the coming weeks.

PS3:  DOWN year on year this week by 199k or -62% and UP year on year - year to date by 25.45%.

Xbox 360 - Again, also experienced a drop from the previous weeks. Halo: Reach should bump sales anywhere from 30k - 130k next week, but that boost won't sustain 3 weeks, so October should see the X360's lowest sales for a few weeks before the holiday sets in.

X360:  UP year on year this week by 31k or 23% and UP year on year - year to date by 22.60%.

Oh for god's sake, do you have to take everything I say as some sort of provocation? Where did I say it would sell 250k per week after Move came out? I would expect a fair boost, primarily from EMEAA. Did you miss my comment the other week that it would lose 800k-900k this month? I'm sure you don't need me to tell you it's only lost 650k so far. Next week I would expect it to lose 60k-110k, the week after 60k-80k, and the next week 60k-80k again as natural increases begin and Fifa launches. The next week is when the 160 GB model comes out in EU and like I said I don't expect big losses in October, 100k-200k. I'm sure you don't need me to outline what happens in November and both ioi and Source have predicted that December would be about flat. And of course all of this is ignoring the possibility of adjustments come quarterly report time or NPD.

@ postoffice, do you expect 320 and move to propel PS3 sales anywhere near the 250k bracket and maintain them?

I'm slightly surprised 360 saw as big of a dip as it did. I'm assuming it's because of a combination of the end of the bank holiday and deterioration from the Arcade launch a few weeks ago in PAL. Wii dropped in Americas but there's still some lingering effect from the legacy deals. Wii Sports sold 5k more than WSR. We'll see in a week or so what impact Move will have once the PAL charts start coming in. Next week is when the 320 GB model launches as well.
