Modern Warfare 2 preorders top 4.5 million worldwide - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 09 November 2009 / 20,704 Views

Final Modern Warfare 2 preorder figures are in and as expected the game is going to be huge. The big question is - will it outperform Grand Theft Auto IV? Most analysts are agreed that Modern Warfare 2 will easily outsell GTA IV in the long term, but how about in the first week?

http://brutalgamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-2.jpg

GTA IV sold around 4 million units on day one back in April 2008 with a similar Tuesday launch to Modern Warfare 2. Over 2.4 million units were sold in the Americas and 600,000 units in the UK. Week one sales came in at 5.92 million units - 3.38 million on Xbox360 and 2.55 million on PS3.

With total preorders across Xbox360, PS3 and PC at well over 4.5 million units and a week one of 6-7 million expected, VGChartz predicts that Modern Warfare 2 will comfortably outperform GTA IV in overall revenue - around $500 million is expected to be generated worldwide in the first week, more than any film, book or music product in history. On Xbox360 and PS3 specifically, sales combined should be very similar to GTA IV but we think that Modern Warfare 2 will see stronger splits for both the Americas vs Europe and also Xbox 360 vs PS3 than with GTA IV.

What remains to be seen at this stage is what kind of hardware boosts the title can produce - with the game expected to perform much more strongly on Xbox 360 and with specific Xbox bundles (along with the continued Walmart gift card deal in the US) it is entirely possible for Xbox 360 to end the week ahead of PS3 - this would be the first time since the PS3 slim release back in early September.

I'm thinking a typical pre-orders to week 1 sales coefficient is 1.5. Though probably less than 1.5 for games with reallly high pre-order numbers. But let's go with 1.5.

4.5 million *1.5 = 6.75 million. Margin for error means (article says well over 4.5 million) 7 million is a distinct possibility. > 6 million is fairly certain (that would be a pre-order to week 1 sales coefficient of only 1.33 which is about as low a coefficient as one could realistically expect for any game). Taking out PC sales I'm going to go with PS360 WW sales for week 1 of 6.5 million.

No chance of 6 mil? lol. My Wal-Mart sold over 400+ copies between 360 and PS3 in less then 24 hours (when I left we were at 320 and I'm sure we'll sell 80 by midnight) and we didn't even take pre-orders. A lot of stores were already sold out around here despite the insane shipments we were getting.

This is way bigger then the GTA IV launch.

Queues all over the place, last nights midnight launch was crazy. I think I saw atleast 500 people queueing in three different game shops down in my local shopping centre.

That MW2 bundle is doing some damage this week. I never walked into a video game store before where I had to wait 1 hour in a que just to get served and the amout of people buying MW2 xbox 360 bundles was crazy. I have to say microsoft have treated MW2 like its one of there own exclusives and heres infinity ward saying they hate the consol war. Well that exclusive bundle is definitly fueling the dam thing and thats for sure. Xbox 360 300k units sold ww this week

I hate these hype games. Something about a game expected to sell gazillion copies makes me not want to buy it. I feel like im following the herd.

In the UK Game, Gamestation etc are selling it on consoles for £45 / $75 (ouch) but supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda etc are selling it instore for only £26 / $43 so unless the suprmarkets make a loss it shows what a huge mark up the evil Game'station' have on each copy sold.

oh ya initially i thought that the game would look practically the same like the previous cod installment and while they do the 360 version does have an added level of bloom lighting. (and no it has nothing to do with contrast or gamma)

The question is does MS need to make these huge pushes every week for the rest of the year to stay ahead of PS3 worldwide, or will this initial Walmart and MW2 boost provide enough momentum to carry them through ahead of PS3 for the holidays?

I think MW2 will have only a slightly better HW boosting effect on 360 than PS3. Perhaps 10% difference in Americas and 5% elsewhere. The major boost comes from the Walmart promotion.

I still think people should stop using the phrase "biggest entertainment launch ever". It simply isn't true and never can be for any videogame. It might only be described as such if you limit your claim only to the amount of money changing hands. But that isn't the only criteria for "biggest ever" and I bet it isn't even true by that limited financial criteria. The figures are probably not publicly available but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the worldwide advertising revenue and ticket sales revenue generated from the Olympic Games opening ceremony is well over $500 million, and the TV audience is well over 1 billion world wide. A video game simply cannot compete with that sort of launch.

IW deserves a huge amount of credit for the fanbase it has built for its games and it will achieve an incredible milestone if it does break $500 million in the first week. Just don't overstate the achievement if there isn't the data to back it up.

I've never preorddered a game in my life, but I did take advantage of the $20 coupon code at Amazon for preordering MW2. Walmart had the same offer. So preorders are higher because you have people preordering that never done so before. There weren't these type of offers for GTA4.
