PS4 Was the Best-Selling Platform in the US of the 2010s - Sales

The PlayStation 4 was the best-selling platform in the US of the 2010s decade, which ran from 2010 to 2019, according to NPD. The research firm did not provide any exact figures.

The PS4 has sold 32.17 million units in the US, according to our estimates. This is a decent amount ahead of other platforms released this past decade. In the US, the Xbox One has sold 27.56 million units, the 3DS has sold 23.00 million units, and the Switch has sold 17.54 million units. The Wii U also sold 5.70 million units in the US, and the PlayStation Vita 2.44 million units.

The PS4 is ahead of its predecessor, the PS3, which sold 26.99 million units in the US. Other previous platforms that ave sold better than the PS4 in the US includes the DS with 52.78 million units sold, the Xbox 360 with 45.14 million units sold, and the Wii with 41.70 million units sold.

Thanks VentureBeat.

Not exactly a surprise since its entire generation falls in the 2010s while the other big consoles overlap with another decade.

Xbox One, Wii U, and 3DS all fell within the same decade. Doesn’t make sense to disregard them.

None of those sold much, and aren't really one of the “big” consoles, ie the generation winners. :-P

True, but they were still competition. Pretending they didn’t happen just comes off as discrediting PS4’s accomplishment. And let’s not forget, this article is about the US, where the XB1 has still done a respectable amount.

exactly this was a weird number for NPD to publish... it just cuts the last generation in half, so really all it is saying is the ps4 outsold the xbox one in the u.s. unsurprisingly

DialgaMarine: Huh? I'm not pretending or excluding anything, and the other consoles are irrelevant anyway. We already know PS4 won last gen, and because the other winners in the past didn't have much of their time within the last decade, saying “PS4 won the decade” isn't exactly a surprise. That's it.

Well deserved!

That's good company with the others, ps4, xbox 360, ds... I think the switch will join the 30+ million gang.

Of course it was. Tons of exclusive 1st party and 2nd party content. Tons of Japanese games that only came to PS4 and PC. Microsoft pretty much throwing the generation away from day one, with multiple bad decisions. Nintendo having a serious flop with the Wii U, and only recovering with Switch in the final three years of the decade.

PS2 dominated the 2000s, PS4 dominated the 2010s. PS5 or PS6 to dominate the 2020s?

Alistair Phoenix20 (on 19 January 2020)

The playstation 2 didn't dominate, it sold 53 million and the xbox 360 sold 49 million, there's not even a 10 percent difference in the U.S.

PS2 dominated its respective gen, and 360 sold that number from 2005 to 2018. I know I’m being pedantic, but only 360’s numbers up to 2010 would count when comparing them to PS2 in that decade

Not my favourite console (that would probably be ps2 or snes)...but a solid platform with a decent lineup of games. Well deserved.

We knew that for a long time, but I'm surprise PS4 have like 5M lead over X1 over there.

Not a huge surprise. I got my PS3 in 2009 just before the start of the decade when it was near its peak.

The Switch has already outsold the PS4 in Japan by 50 percent. I know which platform will be getting the Japanese games this gen.

Your numbers show 49 million for Xbox 360 and 35 million for PS4 btw. Not 45 million for Xbox 360. The highest selling of the decade is a stupid number. It cuts the Xbox 360 sales right in half for no reason. Top selling of consoles that were active from 2010-2019 would be DS, XBOX 360, and Wii.
