For the sales period ending May 1st, 2009
Welcome to the new Monthly edition of XBLA Charts. Although it's been a little longer than a month since the last chart (due to some internal changes with the charts), they're back!
The big note for the month is that some titles, lettered A through F were tracked about a month and a half, whereas G through Z are for the correct period of 4/1/09. The reason for this was that I encountered some major errors in mid March with data tracking, and lost some data. Fortunately, the LTD numbers are correct for all games, but the reporting period was a bit wonky.
Hasboro Family Game Night is doing spectacularly. Despite the initial findings of $500,000 in sales for the first month, the data is decieving. The fact is, this is the minimum amount of sales for Game Night games. The issue is that breaking out data for each of the 5 games is rather difficult to do at the moment. The value is for the total number of people that have bought at least one game. Once we get better data tracking methods in place (which are coming), we can break out full data on this title. I have a feeling that, given Major Nelson's data, that this title has most likely sold 100,000 units between the 5 titles, as it's been charting above Castle Crashers almost each week since it's debut.
OutRun Online Arcade also had a strong debut at just under $500,000. Although the price point is too high (IMO), players have done well to buy the title, and it's position indicates strong conversions. Expect a large drop, however, next month.
The Dishwasher the first community/XNA game that went to XBLA had incredible sales in April. Although a 10th place finish is considered 'low', the fact is that it's outsold a hefty amount of Microsoft's Community Games, as per the data many have seen from Gamasutra and other sources.
Puzzle Quest: Galactrix had a very weak debut. The $20 price tag may have hurt it, as it grossed under $200,000. This is strange given Puzzle Quest: CotW's strong sales. Maybe sequels on XBLA aren't the best way to go?
Banjo Tooie and Virtual-On OT were only out for a few days, so please forgive their low charting. They both had fairly weak (versus other big titles) debuts. But given VOOT's niche userbase, it's not too bad for this title at $15.00. BT, on the other hand, did pretty bad, alongside Flock.
In my analysis, Microsoft and it's developers aren't doing the market any favors at the $15 price level. At the higher pricing schemes, you MUST have a $15-20 game, which few titles are. Most are $10 titles that were forced into a higher-price bracket. As we've seen, Castle Crashers has done great there, but it's a title that had a deservedly high price tag. Not so with an N64 port of BT, a Dreamcast port of VOOT, and other games in the $15 price level. The only ones that have done well have been of incredible quality such as Castle Crashers, Braid, Puzzle Quest, and Street Fighter 2HD - major works in the upper echelon of what's offered on the system.
Otherwise, sales were very strong for the month. Minus the updates and adjustments, you can't argue with over 2.5 million units sold on the month. I do expect the numbers to dip in May due to the skewing of titles from A-F, but should sell around 2 million units.

Don't confuse download numbers with leaderboard numbers. Any one xbox can have dozens of player accounts. Example: I buy Castle Crashers and create 3 other players for my roommates/friends/family to play with me. One purchase now equals FOUR leaderboard notches. The Behemoth cannot associate leaderboard numbers with sales figures. And while The Behemoth can track leaderboard numbers minute to minute, they don't get daily (or even weekly) sales figures from Microsoft.

You mentioned 642,900 (units Ltd) for Castle Crashers ? How is it possible ? Because THE BEHEMOTH just started a contest (check at http://www.thebehemoth.com) and they inform about 900,000 use leaderboard, so big difference...(257,100...)

Bought outrun...good 800 pts buy. Whats up with new games being 1200 pts? I guess xbox live is being hit by the bad economy and inflation.
DLC numbers are do-able, but not at this very second. The main issue is that I need a more comprehensive system to tabulate DLC sales....This takes time and money to hire a programmer.
Yeah games add-on numbers would be nice.

It's going to be weird getting used to the new order. From units sold to revenue gained, but it makes sense considering the type of market it is.

MVCS I thought was confirmed to be $15 but I could be wrong. Worth $20 anyways considering my XBox Copy went for $70 and most of those copies on eBay went beyond that.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will be $20. Just you watch.
800 points is a great price for Outrun. Not too high at all. All these 1200 point games have to go. I'll gladly pay that much for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 but Microsoft seems to think 90 percent of all new games should cost that much.
I see what look like several mistakes in this, though it's great work nonetheless.
As everyone's been pointing out thus far, OutRun Online is only 800 points. Meanwhile, Banjo Kazooie is currently 1200 points, meaning it actually pulled in $220,500 and 25th place for the month (and change from the previously lost data).
$20 is the new $15, $15 is the new $10, and $10 is the new $5. And, well, $5's the regular entry for XNA games. I'd imagine that's the rationale, at least. I would've bought Lode Runner on day 1 if it was 800 points. I settled for yet another version of Peggle, instead.
I only payed 800 ms points for Out Run does the game have a different pricing in America and since i bought a 3200 points card the game ended up costing something like 5 or 6 euros how is it that this game costs 15 bucks ?
Great month for Behemoth revenue-wise with Castle Crashers' continued dominance of the charts, and Alien Hominid's return to the top.
I absolutely agree that the whole 1200 pricing is hurting the sales of a lot of new games. I won't even consider getting a game for 1200 unless I know it's something really special like Braid or Castle Crashers.

I'm not paying $20 for Puzzle Quest: Galactrix. I was going to get it and then saw it was $20 and I ended up getting "The Dishwasher" & "Peggle" instead. both are very fun games. None of the games up there are worth $20. Like a fool, I missed out on the 1/2 price sale for Penny Arcade Adventure, so I wasn't able to get that either. I might get Smash Poker next. I heard that game was decent. I need a larger hard drive and will have that once I get my Elite.
