Microsoft: Xbox One Sales Increased 15% Year-on-Year in Q1 2018

Microsoft: Xbox One Sales Increased 15% Year-on-Year in Q1 2018 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 03 May 2018 / 5,326 Views

Microsoft announced sales for the Xbox One increased by 15 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018.

The number of Xbox Live players also increased by 13 percent. There are now more than 1.2 million Clubs on Xbox Live.

Read the complete message from Mike Nichals, CMO for gaming at Microsoft, below:

The passionate community of gamers on Xbox are our inspiration. As we get ready to share a fantastic lineup of new games for Xbox players at E3 2018, we want to take a moment to thank them for a record-setting start to the year.

Today, we’re witnessing a record-setting number of players, playing at record levels, and engaging in new ways. Xbox Live players are up 13 percent and Xbox One sales are up 15 percent over the same period last year, but that’s not all. We’ve seen more than 600,000 friendships forged with the Looking For Group feature and there are now more than 1.2 million Clubs on Xbox Live.

We’re seeing tremendous engagement of mega-hits like Fortnite and Far Cry 5, both of which play best in 4K Ultra HD on Xbox One X, joining the more than 200 games that now feature Xbox One X enhancements. But we’re also seeing fantastic engagement with Xbox One console exclusives like Sea of Thieves, the fastest-selling Microsoft Studios new IP of this console generation, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, whose new desert-themed map is now available to play on a dedicated test server ahead of its launch in Xbox Game Preview later in May. We also reached a couple milestones recently with players having enjoyed over 4 billion hours on games released through our ID@Xbox program and nearly 1 billion hours on games in our Xbox One Backward Compatibility library.

Xbox Game Pass has been a great contributor to growth in players and engagement. With over 100 great games available for one low monthly price and new games added every month, including new games from Microsoft Studios the same day as their global release, Xbox Game Pass is all about introducing you to new genres, franchises, and games. It’s been incredible to see the growth in the service and the growth of engagement in franchises made available in Xbox Game Pass. We’re next looking forward to bringing State of Decay 2 to Xbox Game Pass members on May 22nd, the same day as its global release, as we continue to work to deliver the ultimate gaming membership for our fans.

It’s also been amazing to see what the passionate Mixer community has achieved in such a short period of time. Late last year, Mixer exceeded more than 10 million active users in a month for the first time – a milestone we’ve since eclipsed, and then some, each month to start 2018. HypeZone channels for Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds are now among the most popular on Mixer, introducing you to a range of streamers in the midst of the most intense Battle Royale moments. Creative new channels have been started for game developers sharing their work-in-progress games, as well as cooking, music, and art, as just a few examples. Mixer will continue to grow thanks to you all, staying true to remaining a positive and fun space for gamers, streamers, and viewers.

It’s a great time to be a gamer and to be a part of Team Xbox. We’re hard at work on exciting plans for E3, from what will be a great briefing filled with new games to the fan experience at the Microsoft Theater. This is our biggest E3 yet, and we look forward to a great week for gamers. Again, thank you to the amazing Xbox community.

Microsoft is now just waiting for the next generation. Clearly they lost this one to Sony.

DialgaMarine ship31 (on 03 May 2018)

If Sony announces more AAA PS4 games, as well as that PS5 will be 100% BC with the entire PS4 library, as well as FC with the biggest PS4 titles, then they’ve already won next gen as well.

Qwark ship31 (on 03 May 2018)

They will probably keep losing to Sony if they largely offer the same product with less AAA first party games. Xbox is just not as strong as a brand as Playstation. Especially now that Halo is less popular and they don't have a Gears of War like franchise this gen. Microsoft really needs a new huge series for the X2 if they want to compete with Sony, provided the latter doesn't screw things up (like they did with the PS3)

AlfredoTurkey ship31 (on 03 May 2018)

What they're doing is what Sony did last gen. They're gathering gamer good will in the places where they can and are going to leverage it at launch next gen. I fully expect for them to find the few holes in the PS5 strategy and exploit them like Sony did with the whole digital games thing etc.

AlfredoTurkey ship31 (on 03 May 2018)

@dialga... Sony tried that with the PS3. Total BC with their most dominant console of ever... and how did that work out?

  • -10
Masked_Muchaco ship31 (on 03 May 2018)

@AlfredoTurkey The PS3 launched a whole year after the X360, costing $200 more, and that's what hurt PS3 sales. Sony will probably not repeat that same mistake.

DonFerrari ship31 (on 04 May 2018)

Yes, there will be a lot of good will for MS coming from their lack of exclusives.

VGC numbers have an increase of 24% YoY up to march 31st (1.16m Vs 1.51m) so seems it's been overtracked.

DonFerrari Barkley (on 03 May 2018)

VGC will always be somewhat over/undertracked.

Good. The Xbox One of today is not even recognizable from the Xbox One that launched. They have slowly turned that ship around and deserve any rewards that come from it.

They turned the ship around? Did they?

Way too early to say something like that. They’re still sinking.

And yet. Still no reason to actually play my Xbox One X.

  • +8
scrapking Pemalite (on 03 May 2018)

Halo Wars 2 has me play every day. I could play it on PC, but the Xbox One X is far, far cheaper than a similarly powered PC so I haven't bothered to invest in a high-enough-end PC to play it. So that's a reason to fire up the Xbox One every day for me.

  • -3
DonFerrari Pemalite (on 03 May 2018)

He have a top end gaming PC, so that argument won't stand for him.

  • +3
Pemalite Pemalite (on 03 May 2018)

Exactly. My PC is far superior to the Xbox One X.

Halo Wars 2 also has a non-existent online population anyway in Oceania, both on PC and Xbox, making the multiplayer component entirely useless, which is sad... Because as far as Console RTS games go, it's probably one of the better titles.

Doesn't hold a candle to the likes of StarCraft 2, Company of Heroes, Homeworld and such on PC though, but it's still a solid title.

That's a pretty good increase. Not enough to catch to PS4/Switch of course, but X1 will easily end up over 50 million.

  • +7
Errorist76 flashfire926 (on 04 May 2018)

XBox sales were at no all time low last year. It’s just a slight improvement in revenue which is 100% due to the much more expensive X1X. Nothing more.

Meh, it's doing okay. Well on its way to eventually end up at double the OG xbox.

It's not the 83 million they did with 360, but it's already well past the N64 lifetime sales.

  • +8
DialgaMarine curl-6 (on 03 May 2018)

Agreed. I expected a lot more, considering how aggressively they’ve been marketing X.

@Jigsaw You seem pretty upset. SoT fallout still got you down?

  • -4

But that is more because of PS4 and Switch doing great than X1 doing terrible, they are doing ok.

  • -6

they are actually quite good sales, just not as good as Switch or PS4. When it comes to business success being first or last is not all that matters. Only on sites like this is that the primary measure of success.

On Jigsaw defense all consoles have a lot of trash released on them.

CartBlanche (on 03 May 2018)

This is great news!! I also really do hope that this talk of "new games" isn't just bullshit. But again they don't just need ANY new games, they need new quality IPs, that really do show off the console's capabilities. IPs that show off great story telling, gameplay mechanics and graphics. The holy trinity of games. Gamer's palettes are a lot more sophisticated these days, so games need the right balance of the trinity to make gamers want to play it on their specific console and no where else!!

  • +2
Faelco (on 03 May 2018)

The sales are growing in numbers or value? With the One X, an increase in value seems obvious... And the 13% of new Live players include PC, or not?

  • +2
scrapking Faelco (on 03 May 2018)

Good question whether PC players are included or not. I doubt they'd inflate the numbers by even 13%, though. If PC players are included they would presumably be PC players playing Play Anywhere titles through the Windows Store only, after all. There are some people doing that, one of the people on my Halo Wars 2 friends list plays it on their PC so I know it to be true, but I think it's a relatively small number all the same.

DonFerrari Faelco (on 03 May 2018)

Don't ask for very precise numbers or wording.

  • +2
Errorist76 Faelco (on 04 May 2018)

It’s obviously just revenue due to the more expensive X1X. Sales are to a no a all time low since last year. Maybe a slight increase.

  • -3
DonFerrari (on 03 May 2018)

They didn't give last year numbers or even this year... and although we know FY17Q1 was low, it is important to celebrate the improvement.

Well, getting stable numbers for like 3 years is still good considering the level.

  • 0
Errorist76 DonFerrari (on 05 May 2018)

Tbh it seems like that’s the reason why’ve they’re focusing on BC so much...they're just trying not to lose any more fans. Not so sure it’s working though. The added revenue is solely to the release of a more expensive console. Could even be the sales numbers are actually down yoy.

  • -2
DonFerrari DonFerrari (on 06 May 2018)

If they manage to make more money through gamepass and playanywhere using PC then they will have even less reason to invest a lot on xb2 which if I were a xbox fan I would be concerned.

  • -1

Such a great consoles with great price , but too bad it does not have value in games and exclusive games. It need a great games. But it's late already well at least they try.

scrapking (on 03 May 2018)

The Xbox One (if one includes the Xbox One S and Xbox One X) will go on to be the most successful Xbox in terms of actual consoles in use at any one time. By any reasonable measure, it's at least equal to Xbox 360 sales... if one considers the large numbers of RRoDed Xbox 360s that had been removed from use by this point. It's no wonder that Xbox Live engagement is so much higher now, while the Xbox 360 sold a little higher than the Xbox One if you align their launches, the Xbox One is far more reliable than the Xbox 360. The number of Xbox 360 units that failed only to have people buy new retail units instead of repairing their old one, was very high (perhaps because of a bundle that interested them, perhaps because even the three year extended warranty was up and repairing the old unit was cost prohibitive compared to replacing it with a new and hopefully more reliable unit). I had a few Xbox 360 units that were replaced under the extended 3 year warranty, but once that was up I always purchased new retail units when one died. In contrast, all of my Xbox Ones are still operating perfectly, including my launch day unit. None of this takes away from Sony's achievement this generation, they turned around their fortunes and then some. But the Xbox business has continued to grow too.
