Sony Interactive Entertainment announced worldwide PlayStation 4 sales have surpassed 73.6 million units as of December 31, 2017. More than 5.9 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold during the holiday season.

645.0 million games have been sold on the PlayStation 4 at retail and through digital downloads on the PlayStation Store.

"Thanks to the continued support from our fans across the globe, we are honored to announce remarkable sales during the holiday season," said John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

"PlayStation Network continues to demonstrate spectacular growth, with the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers surpassing 31.5 million, and PS Store recording its largest-ever monthly sales of content in December 2017. Don't expect PS5 any time soon as long as PS4 continues to do good business.

One would expect that...that said, there are contracts with hardware manufacturers being made and first rumours about PS5 dev kits being already out in the wild.

Truth be told? I was expecting a bit more already, I thought it would be closer to 700M. But 645M is already pretty good

Congrats to Sony!

The PS4 offered the widest variety of quality games with plenty of power under the hood at a great price. And very consumer friendly at that. Well earned.

The 79 million forecast for March 2018 is looking very good. Shipments are probabily over 76 million, if they are flat or a bit up YOY first Q1 of 2018 they'll hit 79 million. :P

How many of those games would be retail? I'm thinking around 530m retail and 115m digital?

John2290 (on 09 January 2018)

Nice one.

As at ending of november 2017 PS4 was at 70mill and at the end to 2017 it is at 73.6mil. It may not be able to sell 5mil by march 2018 but it has made great strides. There was a lot of competition with Xbox1S and switch, however sony needs to do more with softwares to sail pass 80mill fast. Anyway congrats Sony

CrazyGamer2017 (on 09 January 2018)

As if it was still necessary to point out how successful the PS4 is, no suspense here, the real issue is who's going to be second, Switch or Xbox? And I mean lifetime sales and worldwide, only figures I really care about. Partial/local figures are interesting but ultimately it's worldwide and lifetime that matters.

Errorist76 (on 09 January 2018)

If sales for Switch and PS4 stay that strong Switch might overtake X1 by the time PS4 hits 100m.

Thanks to all the casuals who made this happen, and none of the exclusives, because they made no difference. And thanks to Microsoft for messing up their launch which automatically made PS4 sell as much as 37 million more systems than Xbox already.

This thing is unstoppable, truly insane numbers.

kazuyamishima (on 08 January 2018)

According to vgchartz the total sales of Ps4 as december 9th are 71.8, so that means only 600K weekly for the rest of december.

Adjustments are being made.

so it failed to do 20 million in a calender year since it was at 55.2 million this time last year, still good sales for an amazing console though.

Barkley (on 09 January 2018)
